The fight for a rural community to keep its identity, three sisters coming together to make the oldest's dreams of a country B&B and wedding destination business come about, and a second chance at romance for Coley and Dean. It was a quick and cozy yet spicy read for a likable pair that needed to get beyond their past issues.
As the first book in a series about three sisters, Coming Together tells the story of the oldest sister, Nicole 'Coley' Garner. She and her younger sisters lost both parents and Coley left college to come back home to finish raising her younger sisters. Coley gave up so much and now its her turn to have her dreams. I'm always up for a fight against the mean Goliaths of the world so I was right on board with Coley's fight against the greedy people trying to take away her dreams and her community.
I confess that at first I was none to impressed with Coley because she spends much of the book in denial when it comes to her old high school crush, Dean Alexander. For the longest time I just did not get her issues with him. He stole a teenage kiss on the night before he left town for good to go off to college and his hopes for a baseball career. He didn't trick her and he made no promises. And yet, she's blown this into a huge thing that festers ten years later. Now, I finally caught on later in the book, that the girl has abandonment issues and so her hang-up has little to do with the truth or right and all to do with fear and trying to shut down ever getting hurt again. Coley wants Dean, but she doesn't want to want him because he makes her feel even ten years later. If she can convince herself he's the bad guy and untrustworthy and a liar then she can protect herself.
But too bad for Coley's internal defenses, she learns that Dean's a stand-up guy and once he sets eyes on her again, he steadily falls for her- crankiness, doubt and all. Dean stands by her and is so patient even when she all, but calls him a liar constantly even in the face of proof that he's not. He jumps into the community fight and into supporting Coley's dream to restore Starling Place and make it a destination wedding place and B&B. I liked him for Coley and liked them together even though I never did quite get over my impatience for her to get a clue. The hot and spicy sexy times might have helped a little.
In the end, I liked this one and enjoyed the introduction to Coley's sisters and some of the key people in the community who will turn up in future books. I rooted hard for the community fight and for Coley to get over her past and accept Dean. I had a chance to read Sadie and Daniel's side story, a nice winter sultry quickie, which I can recommend right along with Coming Together.
