Ash Falls is the city your mother didn't know to warn you about. Supernatural creatures run the underworld. Spirits stalk the streets. Dark magic kills more people than firearms.
Ash Falls is also where private detective Brian Drake lives and works. Tasked with uncovering which member of a shadowy council ordered the murder of a reclusive millionaire in an attempt to seize power, Drake is forced to unearth skeletons in every corner of the city, including his own closet. What he discovers will threaten his life and alter the balance of power in Ash Falls forever.
When I first came across this book, I had assumed it would be another standard police procedural with a splash of horror thrown in. The scope of this story, however, was far beyond what I had anticipated. From the characters (I liked Brian's girlfriend, Jessica... that girl has skeletons for her skeletons!) to the monsters (Vampires? Check. Werewolves? Check. Small collective of minor gods who perform a monthly ritual to prevent humans from escaping the city and be more easily served as food? Check, check, and check!) to the overall depravity of the city of Ash Falls itself, there is so much happening here with so much potential it boggles the mind. Perhaps the most intriguing element to the whole thing is that not only is "Inheritance" the first of several novels in this series, Schofield is also the first of several *authors* writing full novels (and/or full series) in this same setting of Ash Falls. This "Storyverse" concept is similar to how the Marvel movies are all connected & overlap one another's characters and major events. The difference is that Schofield designed the Ash Falls Storyverse to be this way from the start. He invented a world with a near-infinite amount of potential, and cross-referencing timelines, plotlines, & characters is another whole element of entertainment you're not going to get anywhere else.
Full Disclosure: After I read "Inheritance", I was contacted by the publisher & invited to become one of the authors writing one of those other stories. So, yes, my opinion could be viewed as totally biased. But to be perfectly blunt, if I hadn't totally loved Schofield's writing, story, & Storyverse concept from the start, I would never had agreed to join the insanity.
A visit to Ash Falls is unlike any place you’ve ever been. Hovering over the city is a darkness that has become familiar and comforting to some and a place to hide in the darkness for werewolves, vampires and other beings. Brian Drake takes you on a wild and terrifying ride through Ash Falls only to discover that he knows less about this city than he thought and finds more about the beings dwelling there. First time novelist, Jeremy C. Schofield does a masterful job of guiding you through the city and introduces you to a world that comes alive with unforgettable characters with every page.
If you like vampires and werewolves and all the other denizens of the "other world", then you will love a visit to the strangely creepy Ash Falls. Filled with flawed characters (some deeply flawed!) and a storyline that keeps you riveted, you can't go wrong with this one.
