Once again the Deadly Troubadours find themselves in the center of of trouble, only this time it isn't of their own making!
The city of Tryst is on the road to recovery after the dragon incident, but wounds are still fresh. The arrival of the Duchess of Outer Malfinza sets the stage for action and intrigue where the Troubadours find themselves among the targets. As the story unfolds, we also learn more of the history of our main characters with Kestra on the run from her former gladiator house, Demetrius falls in with a guild of thieves, and Talbert seeks revenge on a crew of pirates.
Brent asked for some preview readers towards the end of July, and I was happy to have a chance to read this book in advance of it's publishing.
I read the Deadly Troubadours when Brent put out the print copy (if you haven't read it I recommend you go check it out!) and I was so excited to go adventuring with the characters again. Sand, Sea and Stone picks up very nicely from Deadly Troubadours; there's enough of a gap that it's clear that some time has passed, but also not too much time. Their new pet isn't too large, and you get some more information on what happened right after the end of the Deadly Troubadours. We then learn that the troubadours- of course- are up to more new tricks. I don't want to spoil what that is, but I think it's pretty awesome. Unfortunately, it also gets the troubadours in trouble and that is what adventure this book follows. Throughout we get some more information and scenes from people who were both introduced in the 1st book and also new characters to Sand, Sea, and Stone. We also continue to get the characters back stories- which quite frankly is my favorite part. Our Troubadours have faced some serious drama in their lives before we were introduced to them.
While this book does still have a dragon involved, Sand, Sea and Stone is certainly more of a story centered around magicians, pirates, warriors, and more. It's easy to jump into, exciting to plow through, and- just like the last one- leaves you wondering what will happen next. There's still a lot to be learned about the Troubadours (we're not yet to knowing how these 4 came together to be best buds) and Sand, Sea and Stone leaves with a bit of a small cliffhanger telling us that there is yet more to the story. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good nice read that is perfect for losing oneself in.
Wow! I loved this sequel to Deadly Troubadours! It took the unique world and characters introduced in the first novel and showed a progression not only of their story, but of their development as people. I really enjoyed how the lightheartedness of the story gained some deeper and darker undertones that paralleled the detailing of the characters' pasts as they matured and faced emotional challenges and growth. The action, adventure, and magic that make this book such a page-turner were balanced by an exploration of the psychology and relationships of the characters that made it meaningful beyond just the typical fantasy fiction. I found myself empathizing with all the characters - heroes, villains, and even supporting characters. It was a truly gripping read with some very unexpected developments that left me craving the next installment.
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to read this before publication. Twice! Here's what I thought:
Sand, Sea and Stone is the perfect follow up to Brent Thomas’ Deadly Troubadours. Where the first book delivers explosive adventure introducing us to the series’ bizarre (out)cast of characters, the new novel explores these characters and the world they live in, offering thrills, surprises, humour, and above all fun, in the process. I quickly found myself swept up in the adventure and was happy to ride it right to the end. Can’t wait for the third one!
