About the author

Charles Edward Chapman (1880-1941) earned the A.B. degree from Tufts College in 1902 and the LL.B. degree from Harvard University in 1905. He was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts and in California in 1906. He was one of the founders of the Hispanic American Historical Review and was part of its editorial board since its creation in 1917 until his death.
