More Than A Worship Leader is a challenge and encouragement to those who lead worship to be more. In today's church world, it's easy to get caught in the trap of performing for people, instead loving them off and on the stage. This book explores these dynamics off stage, on stage and even promotes the idea of being up-staged as a worship leader. In an age when worship leaders are known primarily for their skill and style, this is a call for them to be known more for their heart.
Gary Durbin has been leading worship for more than 20 years and has been in full time local church ministry for over 15 years. The philosophies and insights of this book are a product of his experiences in multiple ministries and churches he's led in and been a part of. It is a valuable tool for those who are just getting started and a great reminder for those who are veterans. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter, it's a great opportunity to grow with those on your worship team as well.
The heart behind this book is clear. It's not about a stage. It's not about a title. It's not even about a song. It's about loving God and loving people. Don't settle for being in front of people. Be in the lives of people. It's so much more than a song and you can be more than a worship leader.
This is a great little book that all worship leaders and future worship leaders should read.
More Than A Worship Leader deals with personal and spiritual issues that all worship leaders will have to face and some point in their lives. Gary Durbin gives some very practical advise on how worship leaders can become even better in their job by analyzing issues like motivation, pride, and mentoring.
A basic intro to worship leading that goes over the usual stumbling blocks for worship leaders, like pride, replication/mentoring/discipling, on-stage vs. off-stage presence, and others. Durbin does not provide a step-by-step guide, but gives some general sound advice on how to become more than just a worship leader. A lot of what he discusses boils down to the difference between being simply a leader of music and a pastor who also leads music. Anyone can lead songs, but it takes a humble, committed, servant of God to lead both on and off the stage, someone who disciples the church instead of just singing to it.
Great book. Different from many of the worship books I've read. Many books I've read have helped shape the theological and biblical reasoning behind the way I lead, but this book felt like an expression of the resulting culmination of all that...the heart behind the vision and mission God has led me to in ministry. I will be sharing this book with those who want to better understand the heart behind our church's worship ministry.
I am a worship pastor and have been one for 20 plus years. I was looking for something that I could take some potential leaders through. This book is the place to start. It gets right to the point and is very clear. I am starting to walk leaders through it in a couple weeks, and there are some great talking points already as well as places to really challenge new leaders. This is worth your time if you have been leading for a while or if you're new to it.
Gary brings wisdom about discipleship to both the platform and the process of leading worship and more. If you are new to leading worship, you definitely should read this. If you are a veteran like me, you will gain a valuable tool and challenge to take you ministry deeper.
This book is a great book. I am having my praise and worship team read this and apply some of the useful information to our everyday lives & worship encounters.
