‘New Detroit’, an amazing, fast-paced thriller novel by Gerard de Marigny. This is the sixth book in the Cris De Niro series. This is a standalone novel and you don’t have to read the previous books in the series to understand the story. The plot is smart & gripping. Though I got confused so much in the beginning due to the involvement of so many characters. I got baffled at the ending when Chris’s people stop Naheed’s men outside the mosque. However, the emotional ending almost made me cry. Terrell’s new life awaiting in front of him with the support of Cris & Tonio is heartening. I enjoyed reading this book, as it is filled with suspense on every page. Easy and stunning narration is used by the author. The cover and title both are equally apt to the story. The book doesn’t let you sit peacefully after reading one chapter, it makes your mind go back to the story to find out what is going to happen next. The book also involves humour to make it a more enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book through VRO. I have read the other 5 in the Cris De Niro series and I really enjoyed them all with this book New Detroit being the best. My dad also read it after seeing it on my book shelf and he also enjoyed it. It was really exciting, fast-paced and in great detail. It took me only a few hours to finish it as it was definitely a page turner .I loved the element of suspense. after reading all 6 in this series I'm thinking of reading the 2 in The Archangel series. Thank You Gerard De Marigny for the free copy .
I received a free copy of this book through VRO. This book had so much wonderful detail. In addition to setting the book in modern Detroit - in its beautiful and tragic history. The suspense in the book kept the pages turning while the details allowed you to feel like you were really there with the characters. I was impressed by this author I have never heard of. I will definitely be reading more of this series!
Exciting, fast-paced, with likable characters. I have not read any of the other books in the series before this but the story was still easy to follow.
From the first page this book travels at hyper speed, from the initial setting to the conclusion. i found beneath the sheer pleasure of the story an undercurrent of a more serious thread. , one that has a relevancy to the world today. Set in Detroit amongst the poverty and decay of the remains of the once vibrant sectors of industry, there simmers a fire within the young people ,one that is easily radicalised by those who see a use for it .Having just read Michelle Obamas book," Becoming" ,it was easy to see the impact that loss of work and industry has on the young and marginalised members of society and the way it is often mishandled. The heart of this book is not so much the men and women of Watchtower (you will have to read the book to find out more about who they are and what they do),but the figures of Tonio an ex criminal and Terril his son's best friend. The story is woven around the brutal death of Tonio's son and those responsible for it. This is turn leads to the group specially trained in terror setting out to destroy the one day that America celebrates as a nation of unity ;the fourth of July. It is through Terril and his tied with this group that they are able to nullify the intended terror-but not before the main protagonist escapes . to find out more you will need to read the series which I shall be doing in the near future. Well written ,with an easy to read flow . The vivid picture of the area and the clear cut reasoning as to why radicalisation is so easy amongst disaffected African -American youth in the USA is very pertinent to today's world .
I received a review copy of this book from the author through Voracious Readers. I have never read anything by this author. I also realized after receiving the book that it was book 6 of a series. At first I was a little unsure about how it would stand up as a read-alone, since I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the series. But my fears were unfounded. This is an incredible book and definitely can stand on its own. It is a complex story with smart, brisk dialogue and entertaining characters you cheer for. And the action scenes - well - they were just full of pulse-pounding excitement. It is a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride from the first chapter to the last! Fantastic book!
I started reading this book, unaware it was book 6 in a series, though its very readable as a standalone. I'm certainly going to be reading the others in the series.
The best way to describe it would be a cross between a Tom Clancy novel and a Clive Cussler novel.
Set entirely in Detriot, it does capture the desolation of parts of that city. the story is very fast paced, blending it's characters with a few fictionized versions of some unpleasant real life bad guys.
If you enjoy Clive Cusslers books, then this is certainly one in the same style and a very enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed New Detroit. It was an exciting, action packed page turner. Once started it was difficult to put down. The characters were well developed and interesting. I have not yet read the first 5 books in the series but was able to enjoy this book on its own. I will be looking the rest of the books in the series. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only I hesitated to read it as as a book about terrorists isn’t my usual go-to. But, I sat down and read the entire book. I couldn’t put it down. It held my interest from the first paragraph. I absolutely recommend this book!!
I received this book for free from Gerard de Marigny through Voracious Readers’ Only and I am glad I selected this book! Talk about an action packed adventure!
This is book 6 in the Cris De Niro series and I was a little concerned about that when I first started reading. Have no fear everyone, I was able to follow along with everything and I do not feel I missed out on anything by not reading the first 5 books (but now I want to)!
Cris De Niro runs The Watchman Agency which is an anti-terrorism group, based out of Las Vegas. He is being pitched an idea to turn an area of Detroit into “New Detroit” and create a master planned community to turn the city around. I had to chuckle at the description the author gives of a master planned community as he highlights how Las Vegas has a few. He really described them better than they truly are, just a regular community! Suddenly, their meeting gets interrupted.
The man behind the idea of New Detroit is the brother of the Vice President of The Watchman Agency. The man that bursts into the meeting is his old friend from the ‘hood, a former drug dealer. His son has been murdered (beheaded as the picture in his hand tells us) and he needs answers.
There is an isolated, desolate area of Detroit where this book takes place. Every business has folded and the buildings are dilapidated and falling down. The only thing in the area is a Muslim mosque. We meet the White Widow and learn all about how she recruited members so she could pull off a horrific and grotesque mass murder. Will she pull it off? Will The Watchman Agency even discover her plan while trying to solve a murder? I would love to go into more details but then I would take the fun out of you reading this book for yourself!
There was action on every page. I could not believe how much action there was throughout the book. It was non-stop. Just when you think the problem is going to be solved the book creates a new problem out of that one being solved. The flow of this book was phenomenal. This book was just written so well! I also LOVED the ending; it ends on an upbeat, heartfelt note.
Overall, I give this book a solid 4. I really appreciated the small details in this book that most people would not realize were true. At one point in time The Watchman Agency staff are eating donuts from a new donut shop that opened on Green Valley Parkway in Vegas. Guess what, in 2017 a new donut shop (Donut Mania) opened on Green Valley Parkway. It was a neat detail that not many would know was true! I highly recommend this book!
I was given a complimentry copy of New Detroit book 6 of the Cris De Niro series by Gerard de Marginy via Voracious Readers Only. I found this book to be fast paced, thrilling and suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Another reviewer has stated you can read this book as a stand alone or as apart of the series. While this is true (and i have only read this one book in the series), if you're anything like me, you want to see how The Watchman Agency began, the budding relationships develop and grow., i recommend starting the series at the begining. Thanks Gerard for the tour of New Detroit and the creation of Cris De Niro.
I enjoyed reading the book. I appreciated the addition of prayer to the book. It’s not quite my style of book, though I think my husband would really like it. I felt like the terrorists weren’t quite believable, that there was something lacking. But otherwise had no problems with the plot, tone, or otherwise.
I liked the Detroit setting of this book. Because I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series, it was hard for me to keep all the characters straight. Not sure I was pulled enough to go back and read the previous 5 and I would not call this genre a thriller, unless theorist attacks are now being called that!
I had never read any of the other books in this series, but I didn't really need to! I followed along very well with the story without any previous knowledge of the characters. The story kept me on my toes with wanting to know how it all played out! Would definitely like to read the rest of them.
I had never read this author before but the only regret I have is not having read the previous books in this series. Now I have to make a list & find them all. In saying that, it only took me two days to finish, much to the displeasure of my family. I spent two days with my head buried in my book. The action was non start to finish. The characters were well developed & explained even though thisi the 6th in the series. The plot was intricate, believable, fast paced and very currant. For anyone who likes action, great plots & cool characters I highly recommend this wonderful read.
What a gem of a find. Not my usual style of book and I could have so easily missed it and what a shame that would have been. The storyline drags you in from the very first page. The characters are well developed and convincing. A great topical storyline which is surprisingly easy to follow and is very hard to put it down. Highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more by Gerard de Marigny.
I received this free copy through Voracious Readers Only. I have really enjoyed reading the sixth installment of the series. It's fast-paced, disturbingly interesting and the one which would manage to entertain you till the end.
This was a good read and I thank the author for providing a free copy of this book.
This was a fun exciting read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and their idiosyncrasies. I liked this book so much that I will probably go back and read the other 5 books in the Cris De Niro series and also read the 2 ARCHANGEL books. I will also continue to read this author.
I received a free copy of the book courtesy of VRO. It was a fast paced, action packed thrill ride til the end, which appears to be a start to another thrilling novel. The characters were real and likable. The plot was well developed and unpredictable. I look forward to reading more of this author's body work.
Very fast paced, easy to read book! It was hard to put down so I read it in within 24 hours. The story line is very realistic. The author leaves us with a hint that there may be another book coming!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and read it in one sitting! Great plot and characters. I look forward to reading the previous Chris De Niro books and others by Gerard de Marigny
This novel was filled with suspense and very action packed. The fight scenes, the prayer scenes, and the fending off of the evil of terrorism captivate the reader.
I really enjoyed this book! I had not read any of the other books in the series, neither had I read any books written by the author but I did not feel like it mattered much (although I am curious now to read the others).
The story was fast-paced and it took me only a few days to finish it. I liked the topic, one which is very relevant at the moment and I enjoyed that it was written from the perspective of the `good guys` as well as the `bad guys`. I also discovered that some of the characters appearing in the book actually exist, which makes it even more interesting and current!
While I very much enjoyed the plot, I often got slightly confused with all the names appearing in the book, especially because the author often uses last names, first names and also nicknames interchangeably. This is probably not much of a problem if you are familiar with the characters after reading all the other books. There are also a few little mistakes in the writing, however they did not affect the way I felt about the book, the plot was enjoyable enough for me to overlook them.
All in all a very good book that makes you want to stay awake reading all night!
The story is about a group of radical Muslims who are plotting 10 terror bombings on the 4th July (the baddies.) The goodies are a billionaire philanthropist, his ex-special forces colleagues, lawyer and bad boy from the Hood turned good. The story has pace and keeps you wanting to find out what happens next. However, there's nothing special or new here in terms of the plot or character development. The descriptions of the characters are inconsistent even to the choice of how they are referred to ; Kevin Matthews most of the time but then sometimes just Kevin. The relationship between the characters is explained more than once and makes those parts of the story clunky. The ending stretches the 'suspension of disbelief' rule for this kind of thriller a bit too much. Overall, I enjoyed the book but because of the superficial nature of the plot, I'm not going to buy any of the rest of the series as there's not enough depth to make me care about reading more. I could see this as a straight to TV film as a schedule filler.
This book was my first book about the adventures of Cris de Niro. I was not sure what to expect seeing as this was book 6 but I found that it is very easy to understand the story without knowing the other books. The first few pages were a little confusing for me as they were introductions into the characters. But after those few pages I found that the story pulled me in and I had a hard time putting the book down. Every time I was close to putting it down something new happened and I had to read another chapter. I was on the edge of my seat when Cris found himself in some trouble. And I nearly couldn't help myself of skipping a few pages forward to see if they would be fine in the end. If you are a fan of action stories I would really recommend this one for you.
I thought this book was good. I never wanted to put it down. Full of action and suspense. This is the second book I have read by this author, and I really enjoy his work. He takes events like iam extremisists or ISIS and outs it all in a fictitious work. These are issues so real to every american right now, and to put it in a novel kind if lightens the mood around it. Yes, its serious, yes it's scary, but there are still people trying to good. In the end, that's the message that comes up. We defend our homeland, our country. We keep it safe, and we dont quit until it is. Really well done. I would definitely read it again.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Voracious Readers only. I found this book to be fast paced. I haven't read any of the other Cris De Niro books but found that that wasn't an issue with reading this one. I plan to read the rest now. The suspense in this book kept me turning the pages and had very likeable characters. This book introduced me to Cris De Niro and I look forward to reading more
Despite the authors habit of repeating everones full name in just about every paragraph the story drew me in a kept me reading to the very end...that makes Gerard Dr Marigny a good author. I recieved a copy of the book free from the author to read and if I wished to provide an honest review. Bargain complete & I will be purchasing other books in this series.
