R. A. Torrey was an American evangelist, a Bible scholar, and successor to D. L. Moody. A graduate of Yale, he was ordained to the ministry in 1878.
In the opening chapter, Torrey describes the purpose of his book. “We begin herewith a series of studies of the person and work of the Holy Spirit. We shall begin this series by considering what the Bible has to say about the Holy Spirit as a person. It is impossible to rightly understand the work of the Holy Spirit, or to get into right relation with the Holy Spirit Himself and thus know His blessed work in our own souls, without first coming to know the Holy Spirit as a person. One of the most fruitful sources of error and misconception, of unwholesome enthusiasm and false fire and fanaticism, in the treatment of this whole subject, is from trying to know the work of the Holy Spirit before we first come to know the Holy Spirit Himself.”
Reuben Archer Torrey studied at Yale and in Germany before taking up a pastorate in the United States. As a gifted intellectual, administrator, and Bible teacher, he went on to pastor Moody Church in Chicago and became D.L. Moody's closest associate. In his later years, he traveled the world as an evangelist speaking to millions in Australia, New Zealand, India, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Japan, China, Hawaii, Germany, the United States, and Canada. Torrey edited the last two volumes of the monumental "The Fundamentals" and was instrumental in the founding of both Moody Bible Institute and BIOLA University.
Lately I have felt lead to learn more about the Holy Spirit, who is a Person all Himself. I am realizing just how much I have taken Him for granted and have not acknowledged Him as I should, especially after all He helps me with! This book does a great job explaining His roles and just who He is. Thank you for taking the time to study and write this. I will definitely be reading it again as I feel it is packed with valuable keys that really need to be meditated over.
Excellent writings on the Holy Spirit on who He is to us, why He was given to us, and why we would not want to live without Him. Jesus sent the Spirit of God to us for a specific purpose. We can't survive spiritually without Him. A relationship with Jesus is to know the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as they are one, so can we become one with them. Spiritual life with God, spiritual death without Him. You are given free choice to choose.
