A mystery, that departs from P&P at the very end – Darcy does not return to Longbourn to propose to Elizabeth. At Jane's wedding he ignores her and after shuns her. Can Elizabeth discover why Darcy has turned against her? Is there hope of a happy ending?

There are several excellent reviews that should be read and considered. This is a tough, clean story. It will cause a plethora of emotions within the reader, so be prepared to run the total spectrum from joy to abject horror to raging fury. I’ve never been this angry at Darcy in my life. I wanted to shake him until the rocks in his head rattled out of his ears. Perhaps then he would have some sense. Watching him treat Elizabeth in such a manner, was a cruel torture bordering on unbearable. Dang!!
Wickham: that scum-bag-rat-bastard was a low-life bottom dweller. Darcy should know better than to EVER in this lifetime believe ANYTHING that the pig had to say. Grrrrrr!!!
“When witnesses concoct lies, they often miss the obvious.” John Grisham, The Testament
Caroline Bingley: that social climbing diva had no heart or soul. She deserved what she got… and should consider herself lucky in getting off so easy. Grrrr!
Lady Catherine: Yep… meet your maker b-witch. Although you deserve no absolution… taking your sins to your grave was not a smart thing to do. However, it was pretty cool how you set up your will as a final retribution to a fellow b-witch. There is no moss growing on your crypt.
I liked how a core group stood by Elizabeth. I loved the new Lydia and highly approved the epilogue for her. Georgiana was adorable and the new characters, Lord Netherby and his sister Victoria Netherby, were most excellent and I just adored them.
I have read a lot of JAFF and in each story ODC gets to HEA well warning here this is one where I definitely wanted that not to happen. This is a super angsty story where Darcy doesn't return to Hertfordshire because he receives intelligence that Miss Elizabeth Bennet is a fallen woman and acts upon it. Yes The same man who moved heaven and earth to see Lydia married now falls for a scam. And he cuts Lizzy over and over and further refused to tell anyone what crime he accuses her of.
Eventually the falsehood is revealed and Lizzy is exonerated and he tries to makes amends. Well Lizzy is 1000 times nicer than I am because having him crawl on his knees through glass from Pemberley to London wouldn't have been sufficient penance. The whole situation shows Darcy's lack of discernment and bias. The author has an excuse ready but I for one don't buy it.
I read this a while back before it was listed on GoodReads. Skimmed through it again today, refreshing my memory.
There are story elements that I like, but I have to say I am more irritated, first with Darcy and then with Elizabeth, who seem hell-bent on preventing their own HEA. Darcy receives letters from three people who he should know better than to believe. Yet he does believe them until someone finally points out that the authors might have self-serving reasons to mislead him. Then when the truth comes out, Elizabeth doesn't want to forgive him, assuming all his attempts to make amends are out of duty rather than love. The whole time, they're in love with each other. Good grief!! That's followed up by some well-meaning manipulation by Lord Netherby and his sister that also rubs me the wrong way. By the time the story splutters to Darcy and Elizabeth admitting their love for each other, I was too annoyed with it all to care.
Also problematic to me is the author's heavyhanded descriptions of everyone's thoughts and the amount of redundancy throughout. It makes for a frustrating reading experience.
The writing, from a purely technical point of view, is very good. I don't notice any egregious errors of spelling or grammar.
But overall, it's just not a very enjoyable story, either in plot or in execution.
Excruciatingly angsty but utterly captivating story. Deducted a star for not adding more romance at the end to reset my equilibrium after such a heart-wrenching tale. Deducted a second star as I thought it went rather messy in the second half. A lot of back and forth with little reasonableness.
Darcy never returned from London after Lady C visited Longbourne. The next time ODC met was at the Bingley wedding. Their eyes meet but Darcy shows such disdainful expression to render Elizabeth faint. Subsequent meetings did not fare any better as Darcy shunned Elizabeth at all costs. Lydia's eavesdropping renders some clues to the conundrum but it was a will that solved the mystery. Will it be to late though... Darcy has spent the last year excluding Elizabeth from all socialization which had not gone unnoticed by the Derbyshire society and she was ostracized by all, except a few close friends and family. Not easy to forgive and forget. It was the resolution I struggled with the reasonableness and all the back and forth in especially Elizabeth's regard.
Enjoyable read in a heart-pounding, nailbitingly, trembling hands kind of way...
You've read or heard of people who threaten to haunt someone (or more) from the grave...this author takes the promise to its fulfillment. But it begins even before the death of one we like to despise and loathe.
This Darcy is not our canon Darcy: the man who changed without the dangled carrot in front of his nose. He is told a lie and because there is more than one person in on the plan and, most of all, because one has a very close relationship to him, believes the lie. When the reader (and others) find out just how twisted this plot is he or she may want to slam the book against the wall (I wouldn't do that to my kindle) or shake Darcy and slap him from here to eternity. How could he???
This lie has a deep effect and I can't even hint at it as I don't want to spoil it for others. This is suppose to be a romance but it is much more a mystery. If you like those and you like angst...read this.
Mr Darcy does not visit Elizabeth and avoids her at all cost. The mystery surrounding his strange behavior is the centerpiece of this Pride and Prejudice variation. Our dear couple must discover the truth and learn to trust.
