Heir of the Thunderbird is an excellent story about being young and struggling to fit in – both as a person and as a people.
16 year old Victoria suffers from osteoporose, a terrible bone disease, that keeps her from doing things “normal” teenagers do. Her mother is Danish, but her father was Passamaquoddy, an indian tribe originating from Maine and New Brunswick in Canada.
Off course, there is something fishy about suffering from osteoporose at the age of 16, and in this first volume about Victoria, we follow her on her quest to figure out what is really going on – and why a secret criminal organization suddenly finds her so very interesting, that they want her to “join them”.
To find her true self, Victoria and her best friend Beate goes “Sherloch Holmes” and by finding and following small clues in various original Passamaquoddy legends, the path leads the girls to her fathers family in Canada and a life or death initiation.
The story is well written and both friends and foes are believable characters true to their roles.
The plot mixes fantasy, legends and the detective genre and really swallows the reader. It’s hard to put the book down, when first you get started.
I’m really looking forward to reading the next volume, where the story really takes of! I know this, because I’ve also read the original Danish version – and in this regard, I found it very refreshing to realize, that this isn’t just a translation – the authors work with this English “upgrade” really works!

Reading Heir of the Thunderbird was a great experience. The story flows lightly and I felt I really got to know Victoria and all the other characters. As the reader, you also pick up on the small clues, that leads Victoria on her quest to figure out who she really is, and the way original Passamaquoddy legends suddenly fits in with the contemporary storyline really made me flip – that is really excellent work by the authors!
The main character Victoria is 16 years old, and therefore I think that the books primary audience must be around 12-15 years old, but even though I am much older ;) I really felt entertained.

Great to read something different within the fantasy genre. Can't wait to read the sequal!!

The "Heir of the Thunderbird" marks a new era of teenage-fantasy as we know it from The Twilight Saga with it's focus on the first love alongside a feeling of being different from all the others. Only this time, the focus is on the main character Victoria's search for answers on her own heritage and, thereby, making the story an identity quest. Of course with a twist of unbelivable yet explainable fantasy elements and secret, powerful societies. All well executed.

Amazing how this story can both include the feelings and the life of a 16-year old girl in such a recognizable way and, at the same time, draw upon ancient legends of native Indians without loosing sight of anyone of them.

I can highly recommend the book to anyone interested in fantasy, Indian legends or teenage life in general.

The danish version was great, but this english version just catches the little things missed in the original edit..

This is a great book. It really takes you around, and by twists and turns, it leads both us and its characters down a road, where old myths suddenly springs to life. The story is based on original Passamaquoddy legends, and when you think about it, the connection is really brilliant.

This book has everything you need in a YA fantasy story. The lead character - Victoria starts of as just an ordinary teenager - with teenage issues in abundance. Unwinding her spiritual side, a lot of things in her life suddenly makes sense and sends Victoria is off to a great journey..

I am really looking forward to "joining" her in the next volume.
