This book deals specifically with the design, manufacturing, installation and operational aspects. Where "pure" theory is used, for example in the account of transmission parameters it is dealt with fully and straight-forwardly. On the applications side the chapter on installation includes not only practical coverage of cable jointing and suspension, but also unique material about protecting cable from termites and rodents. A full account of the development and performance characteristics of optical fibres is also included in chapter 14.
