Interesante y actual libro-revista que aborda temas científicos de actualidad o inventos que han revolucionado la sociedad global. Se habla de temas tan diversos como el desarrollo de la fotografía digital y su inclusión nen los teléfonos móviles, los contenedores refrigerados, la minería submarina en busca de riquezas, la seguridad, la secuencia del genoma humano, los estimulantes, las criptomonedas, la nueva exploración del espacio, los parques de servidores o el futuro de la energía limpia, que requerirá intensivos I+D en baterías.
Es curioso cómo el lenguaje puede modificar los conceptos intuitivos. Cuando hablamos de "la nube" parece que nos estuviéramos refiriendo a que el éter tiene capacidad ilimitada para hacer circular la información, como pasa con las comunicaciones de radio o televisión; sin embargo, esta nube es un complejo sistema que trabaja en la tierra (y muchas veces en el subsuelo) para mantener viva la comunicación mediante una mastodóntica red de cables físicos.

really nice to read and nicely printed but a few of the things were a bit like non-global and a bit more western focus. still worth a read, just should be called "objects that power the western economy"

Interesantísimo libro que, en un estilo entre periodístico y enciclopédico, nos habla de todas las cosas materiales que hacen funcionar nuestro mundo y nuestra economía tal y como los conocemos. Así, aprendemos sobre los contenedores de barco, que con su estandarización de medidas permitieron la explosión del comercio marítimo y terrestre, los sensores de las cámaras de los móviles, los escáneres de iris, las secuenciadoras de genes, las granjas de servidores, las baterías de iones de litio y un montón más de cosas por el camino. Es muy interesante y está editado con mucho gusto y mucho mimo. Muy agradable e instructivo.

A good reminder that books can be pretty as well as informational. This book goes over 10 objects that power the modern global economy. From containers to lithium ion batteries and server farms this book has great information about what the forefront and future of technology looks like.

The pictures and inset pages are beautiful. It's a work of art.
