Przez wieki pojęcie sztuki nie budziło szczególnych wątpliwości i na pytanie Sokratesa: „czym jest sztuka?” odpowiadano w sposób naturalny, na przykład: „jest naśladowaniem”. Artyści współcześni, naruszający dotychczasowy status sztuki i zastanawiający się na jej uzasadnieniem, Sokratejskiemu pytaniu nadali postać: „dlaczego coś jest dziełem sztuki?”. Współczesne dzieło jednoczy sferę potoczności i artystyczności, wykracza w teorii poza sferę estetyczną i docieka jej warunków konstytuujących. Od tego czasu nic nie jest oczywiste: ani artysta, ani dzieło, ani sztuka. Nieuzbrojone oko czasu historycznego zawiodło w czasie posthistorycznym, gdy znikły wszelkie podziały i granice – teraz musi zostać „uzbrojone” w teorię. Pomaga ona w rozstrzygnięciu wielu istotnych pytań, jakie pojawiły się w XX wieku, na przykład: „czy załamało się rozróżnienie między sztuką a rzeczywistością?”, „czy świat składa się z utajonych dzieł sztuki oczekujących przemienienia?”, „czy Warhol jest kimś w rodzaju Midasa, który wszystko, czego dotknie, przemienia w złoto czystej sztuki?”. Dlatego współczesny świat sztuki potrzebuje filozofów, a Danto jest pierwszym z nich. Jest także kimś więcej – jest prorokiem sztuki współczesnej.

He was the author of numerous books, including Unnatural Wonders: Essays from the Gap Between Art and Life, After the End of Art, and Beyond the Brillo Box: The Visual Arts in Post-Historical Perspective.

Danto's essay ultimately argues that art cannot be understood purely through its physical properties or its ability to imitate reality. Instead, it requires a broader theoretical framework provided by the artworld, which constantly evolves and redefines what is considered art. This framework helps us recognize and appreciate art beyond its superficial appearance, taking into account the creative intentions and cultural contexts that inform it.

For anyone interested in Arthur C. Danto's theory (perhaps definition and/or creteria) of art, this is a great supplementary text, though not a fundamental one. I would recommend perhaps some other, more accessible texts/books such as his book What Art Is or maybe The Transfiguration of the Commonplace (though the latter also isn't an easy read - but what art theory book is?).

All in all, I personally admire Danto's writing style as well as his theories. The parallels he makes with mythology, cultural studies and various periods of art (considering his main focus is modern art) just prove the vast amount of knowledge he possesses and his creative writing abilities.
