Criticizing a book about the future written in 1987 is plainly unfair, so I'll only point out some of the extremely flagrant statements which exhibit wanton magical thinking or extreme gullibility. On page 106, McDonough writes that "Charlie Smith, a former slave, born eighteen years before the start of the Civil War" witnessed the liftoff of the final Apollo mission in 1972. This would have made Smith about 130 years old, a claim that should have raised an eyebrow or two. On other occasions McDonough seems to take the attitude that if something can be thought, it is inevitable, for example, on page 205, he writes that, on encountering alien civilizations, we "may find that the solutions to the problems of overpopulation, pollution, resources, disease, and war were found long ago, and the answers are streaming toward us at this very moment." If you can read this without laughing I have a unicorn for sale.
