Four Australian children befriend the immigrant owner of a formerly deserted house and discover he is being harrassed by a motorcycle gang who consider his house their headquarters.
I was a sucker for this kind of 1970s children's novel where a group of children come together across class and type to engage in an adventure. This book has a touch of Scandanavian realism, American can-do, British jolly-goodness and Australian wryness that carries the reader along what turns out to be an awfully interesting drama of a bunch of kids helping a German refugee fight off a band of bikers and the provinciality of their home town. Rather good stuff, sentimental and detached by turns.
