Max Finkelstein created Jim Hamond, the Human Torch, for Timely Comics (later evolved into the Marvel Comics) in 1939, using the pen-name Carl Burgos. He also created the Thunderer for Daring Mystery Comics. Both series were published by Timely Comics, the forerunner of Marvel. He was drafted in 1942 and did mostly commercial art in subsequent years, occasionally drawing science fiction stories for Marvel, by that time known as Atlas. He also drew the first story featuring the Beetle (Abner Jenkins) in Strange Tales #123, starring Johnny Storm, the second Human Torch. Two years later, in Fantastic Four Annual #4, Marvel published a battle between the two Human Torches, resulting in the death of Jim Hamond. Although his daughter tried to preserve as much as possible, Burgos set fire to much of the Human Torch materials he had retained from the 1940s, considering the story an excuse to reassert trademark on a character they were not using simply to spite him.
The only thing of notice is The Angel's fight against a synthetic diamond cartel. I guess using radium powered machines to transform coal was worse than child labor in Africa. Pesky wrongdoers!
The Human Torch In this issue Torchy meets another flame user for the first time and is almost completely baffled by him until he reveals he's actually a good guy and needs Torchs help to save the Earth. Torch doesn't believe the guy at first until he throws Torch down a pit to fight their enemies, one of the Flame-Monsters. He wins the fight duh and joins Kalif on a flame journey?
Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner I was hesitant about Namors war-era stories, however, if Namors effort in the war is literally just going to be him fucking up Nazi plans and laughing about it the whole time, I guess I'm game lol
The Angel So the big crime this issue that Angel had to tackle was some men found a formula to recreate diamonds synthetically and nearly perfectly. Apparently that's a bad thing? So Angel punches them in the face. He almost loses, but thanks to an old farm hand and a hobo, he wins the day.
The Vision So smoke is apparently the doorway to another world right? (somehow), so I guess all of the supernatural exist in that other world. In this issue some old occult doctor is attacked by a werewolf. Vision confronts him and we get a decently cool fight with a werewolf. I guess Angel isn't our supernatural guy after all.
The School-Boy Sleuth, Terry Vance Terry helps out a kidnapped actress and this time doesn't get horribly beaten. Instead, Terry fully jump-slammed a table into a goons head, it was actually pretty tough, way to go kid.
Electro: The Marvel of the Age I love when these villains have such insane plots like sucking all of the iron in the Earth to the core, making it lopsided so that it'll tumble out of orbit and be in the darkness of space. The darkness allowing the Onees, one eyed, freak subterranean monsters, to take over the surface world even though... listen guys if Earth is out of orbit, we're all dead so, bad plan.
Adventures of Ka-Zar the Great Ka-Zar and Zar have finally gotten a ship off of New York after Zar is broken out of the zoo. I wish we were able to see Zar the lion slip into his hosts place and crawl into a car, but it's fine. The British liner they jumped ship onto was downed by a German u-boat, so I guess we'll see how Ka-Zar deals with the Nazis next time.
Torch and Namor continue to be great characters and their stories enjoyable. They deserve to be the front end of these books. Ka-Zar was decent too.
Electro was… certainly something. I do think the Electro stories have been at their best when they go full on off the rails. The evil underground onees (oni?) want to use a big suction machine to move the Earth away from the sun so it will be darker and the onee people don’t like the light… “Of course! Don’t you know anything about science!?” Electro is constantly referred to as iron man in this issue.
Angel… what in the bullshittery is going on. Does he have powers? It’s been off and on that he will sometimes appear to fly, but not often, sometimes is super strong, but not often, in this issue he has the magical power to… make a shadow of himself on the walls… just causes my brain to ache.
Vision fights a werewolf. Not much else to that one honestly. The boy detective is here somewhere, but I hate it.
Stories included in this issue: 1. The Cult of Fire-Men (Human Torch) 2. Blitzing the U-Boat Base (The Sub-Mariner) 3. The Synthetic Diamonds (The Angel) 4. Redskins Bite Cinders (short stories) 5. The Werewolf Strikes (The Vision) 6. The Kidnapping of Diana Dunn (Terry Vance) 7. Attack of the Subterraneans (Electro) 8. Escape from New York (Ka-Zar)
The ka-zar story is the only story in this whole comic worth being rated over 6 out of 10. Bad art on the sub-mariner story. Bad human torch story. The angel story is ok. I liked the vision story. I also liked the ka-zar story.
The fluency of writing is getting better. The stories are becoming linked and are no longer stand alone. There are still common themes such as Nazis but that’s understandable for the time.
