Another outstanding book by Kirby Jonas
I have not regularly read westerns for several years. I tried one by Jonas because of the Clint Walker - James Drury connections. In my opinion, Jonas transcends the genre, writing novels set in the American West rather than simple westerns. The ones I have read have been carefully researched, historically accurate, and well written. This novel, Lady Winchester, develops one of the strongest, most sympathetic female characters you are likely to encounter. In addition to the story of Lady Winchester overcoming challenges to the survival of her family, there is an interesting mystery to be solved. With the aid of an Indian friend and a mysterious gambler/gunman she is able to persevere despite her enemies.

It was very entertaining and suspenseful although it could have been better written in places.
The heroine, Kate Winchester, seems to me to play the part of an unlikely hero since she's a pacifist who doesn't care for guns. She also seems to have some of the worst luck since she has been widowed several times while raising her kids. Her religious upbringing often causes her to think that God is punishing her or maybe testing her, which is kind of sad since nothing bad that happened to her was her fault.
I hate to write more because anything could be a potential spoiler since the book has a lot of plot twists after the attack on her latest husband, Ira, whom she initially fears may be dead.
Will Lady Winchester find the bravery to go after her husband's attackers in Wolverine Canyon? Will it change her? Will her husband pull through? Needless to say it was a GOOD READ! I enjoyed it a lot!
