Pulp Horror is dedicated specifically to the golden age of ‘trash’ horror fiction, a roughly 20-year period from the early 1970’s through to the early 90’s.
“Pulp Horror Issue 6” edited by Justin Marriott, the current installment of this Horror review magazine, arrived as a most welcome surprise for me personally, due to the fact that the primary content, 50 pages, is dedicated to Bernie Wrightson who recently passed away on March 18, 2017.
Bernie Wrightson was the man who got me interested in comics. Specifically when I was introduced to his “Swamp Thing”, and then later sought out his horror comics such as “House of Secrets” , “House of Mystery” and “Weird Mystery Tails” . I especially loved his adaption of Fritz Leiber’s Fafard and the Grey Mouser into his “Sword of Sorcery” comic for DC, not to mention the “Creepy” and “Eire” covers he did.
Later Mr. Wrightson was the go to artist working with Stephen King on such work as “Cycle of the Werewolf” , “Creepshow” and the restored edition of King's apocalyptic horror epic, “The Stand,” and “Wolves of the Calla,” the fifth installment of King's “Dark Tower” series. He also illustrated the cover to T.V. guide magazine's April 26 – May 2, 1997 issue, illustrating the TV miniseries of King's “The Shining”.
The remainder of contents is by no means a slouch either, featuring tributes to Shirley Jackson, Peter Saxon, German Horror Pulps, a review of 1977’s year of the Mad and Rabid Dog books published by various publishers. Overall there are more cover reprints in full glorious color and insightful articles to make any book aficionado salivate.
Highly recommended for any collector of obscure books or great artwork some of which can be viewed here:
