Full Speed Ahead The Story Behind the Founding of the Town of Farragut, Tennessee

Rate this book
This is a story of a small group of citizens who dared to fight City Hall and won - big time! It's a story of seven people who, dissatisfied with their government, took matters into their own hands and created a new government and a new town. The courage and dedication they displayed in this quest was a most fitting tribute to their namesake, Admiral Farragut, who uttered those words: "Damn the tornadoes; Full speed ahead."

It is also a message for those to come; Ultimately, the government of any kind is in the hands of the people, just as it was in the days of the American Revolution. In this book, you will get to know the seven founders personally. You will read about their struggles, their sometime disagreements, and their celebrations. You'll probably realize that if any one of the seven had not been a participant in this endeavor, then the endeavor might not have succeeded.

Today, the Town of Farragut is a great example of what a community can become when you have a vision and you live that vision to be more than you think you can be.

Living in Farragut, it is wonderful to read about how and why our town was founded. 38 years strong and still steering by the same principles which the founding group championed. Good book; very informative.

"Full Speed Ahead" is a great short story about the founding of the Town of Farragut, TN. A well written and a powerful story of a group of people who are dedicated to their town and the establishment of it. These brave souls endured the battering of government bureaucracy to complete their assignments. The courage they showed is remarkable and a great testimony of what can be done to overcome obstacles. Enjoyed the book.

A really interesting read - I had no idea what went into the creation of Farragut and how contentious it was. I loved the picture inserts and the fact that Farragut was incorporated so relatively recently (1980) which meant the author was able to talk to many of the people involved and share their first-hand accounts.

A great read for a lover of Tennessee/Knoxville history. Quick read for sure. An urban studies student will enjoy how a new city is created as well.
