Dr. Marvin Marshall demonstrates how to reduce stress, use authority WITHOUT coercion, and avoid counterwill—the natural human tendency to resist coercion. His HIERARCHY OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT is used around the world to promote responsible behavior by using internal motivation—rather than external approaches of threats, imposed punishments, or rewards to control.

His YouTube channel, "Marvin Marshall's Stress Management Tips" shows how to implement these approaches.

He is a professional speaker who is often interviewed in television and radio programs. He has presented in 44 of the United States and in 25 countries on 5 continents to organizations and companies, schools, school districts, universities, and international and foreign governments.

He is a former educator who still has a passion to improve education as indicated by his charity, Discipline Without Stress, Inc. Any U.S. K-12 school can receive his materials at no charge by completing a simple application and agreeing to try his totally noncoercive (but never permissive) system. He also has an online program to show teachers how to motivate students and handle every behavior problem at DisciplineOnline.com.

His newest book, "LIVE WITHOUT STRESS: How to Enjoy the Journey," has received the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award in 2017. The U.S. Review of books described the book as follows: "Live Without Stress, Dr. Marvin Marshall, Piper Press - This book is a fresh and innovating read that details the various ways individuals can improve their lives by shedding the psychologically debilitating exoskeleton of stress. Marshall states that people are affected by their mental states, and fear paralyzes and traps them in a self-imposed shell, one they perceive to be their armor or strength, but in reality it is an anchor weighing them down, miring them in misery. Despite the heavy subject matter, the writing is bright and lively, uplifting and nurturing, offering insights and shedding light into those dark corners of our fear where we seldom venture and, if trapped, never escape."

This is his third in his trilogy of "without stress" books. His others are "DISCIPLINE WITHOUT STRESS: How Teachers and Parents Promote Responsibility & Learning" and his multiple-award winning parenting book, "PARENTING WITHOUT STRESS: How to Raise Responsible Kids While Keeping a Life of Your Own"

His WithoutStress.com has abundant free resources on living, teaching, and parenting without stress.

Dr. Marshall earned his Bachelor's in Language Arts and his Masters' in Business Administration at California State University, Los Angeles. His Doctorate in Education was awarded by the University of Southern California.

Dr. Marshall touches on a wide variety of stress-inducing circumstances and gives suggestions for how to make them less stressful, by either reducing the stressor or changing how you react to it. Some of the advice is enlightening, some seems common sense, some seems doable, some not applicable. Several years ago, I read Discipline Without Stress, Punishments or Rewards and it transformed my teaching. I bought Live Without Stress when it first came out, but was "saving" it for when I thought I needed it. Going through a very stressful time, I decided to read this book in the hopes it would help me. My first impressions were that my expectations were too high, but I found myself sticky-tabbing many excerpts, and applying the tactics Dr. Marshall suggests, and I feel already that I am responding to stressors in a more positive, calmer way. I'd say this book is worth a try if you are feeling down and need a lift.
