I've only read volume one so far but I loved it. It's really more of a novel than short stories, as they follow each other chronologically and are set in the same place and about the same people.

The setting is Dunnett Landing, a small coastal fishing town somewhere in Maine, as seen through the eyes of a writer who spends a couple of summers there. That's all the plot there is, but getting to know the characters and the place is more than enough. They all have their quirks and foibles, but seem to accept each other as they are.

Most of the books I've read set in New England present the place and its inhabitants as dour and severe (and, no, not all of the books were by Lovecraft). This book isn't like that. It's seen through the eyes of love and makes me want to go to Dunnett Landing on vacation.

Now to hunt down volume two on Project Gutenberg.

I never get tired of reading Sarah Orne Jewett. But this particular collection, while it has some stories I've already read, has 8 stories that have never appeared in a collection. So I enjoyed reading new stories.
