I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Wonder Wheels is a sweet celebration of a disabled child getting a new wheelchair. I love the excitement Kobe feels at unwrapping it and then discovering how useful and fun the chair is. At school, he's eager to show off the chair to the other kids. It looks like he will be bullied at first, but he finds a way to show them how the chair empowers him to play more and join in their games. I once had the experience of seeing the joy a brand new wheelchair brought to a friend of mine, so I know this is a genuine feeling. It is something kids with disabilities will relate to and typically developing kids can learn empathy from. The writing by Shawnie Clark is sweet and to the point. The illustrations by Burcin Perven Karamuco are cute. The book is on the short side for a picture book and a good fit for preschool or Kindergarten. I will be recommending it for the school where I work.
