In the year 2316, the World Government headquarters is located in Washington, DC. By law, the entire world speaks one language, known as “the common tongue.” Only government workers and scientists are allowed to speak any other language, referred to as “the dead languages.” If anyone is suspected of learning another language, they swiftly and silently disappear. In addition to a common world language, there is also a world look. All world citizens are required by law to have a surgical procedure at birth in which a microchip is implanted in the base of their skull. This chip affects the part of the brain that controls individuality. It dulls the senses and removes the ability to feel emotion, empathy, even love. People are taught that the chip is necessary for survival, and its removal would result in permanent brain damage. Everyone with the chip develops similar physical characteristics. They all have red hair, translucently pale skin, and completely black eyes.
According to ancient legend, an estimated one out of a million people is born with a resistance to the chip. These individuals are extremely rare, and possess such a strong sense of their own personal identity, that they are somewhat immune to the brainwashing power of the chip. Nevertheless, the World Government continues to carry out extensive scientific research and human experiments in order to upgrade the microchip and improve its capacity to control the human mind.
In early 2316, rumors swirl of a secret antigovernment movement forming underground cell groups throughout Washington, DC and New York. Anyone suspected of involvement in this anti-government activity mysteriously disappears.
In reality, this antigovernment movement was composed of small, scattered cell groups which met and trained in secret underground bunkers. Some members of these groups had the natural immunity to the chip. They searched for evidence of a pre-existing world order, for a time when people lived without the chip. When the World Government first came to power, all traces of the former world order were destroyed, and the new system was brutally enforced. Chips were implanted in every world citizen, and a common language was strictly enforced.
When the microchip was implanted at birth, certain physiological changes took place. Individual eye color was removed, as the pupil was forced to dilate so completely, that it filled the entire eye, turning it into an endless black-hole. This black, empty eye gave people a blank, zombie-like stare, devoid of feeling. Hair color was also affected. Anyone with the chip could only grow red hair, and their skin color became deathly-pale. These easily recognizable physical characteristics helped the government identify and arrest anyone who might have an immunity to the chip. Such cases resulted in chip re-installation and upgrade, in which people lost even more of their individuality.
Only a few remained who had a resistance to the chip; and fewer still who were brave enough to search for answers. Most people did not realize that the government’s control over society’s perception of reality was growing stronger each day.
One of these rare individuals, born with a resistance to the World Government microchip, was Selene Sayer. Selene had always been different from other world citizens, but she learned to hide her individuality well in order to survive. When she was implanted with the chip at birth, her eyes did not turn completely black like all the others. One eye retained a dark-blue tint. Her parents had the abnormality secretly corrected with laser surgery when she was very young. Despite the horrors of the world she lived in, Selene somehow retained a pure spirit, and the rare ability to feel sympathy for other humans...
