Are you ready for Monsters and Mayhem? Frankie wants to be a famous inventor, but her inventions are always getting her into Monster Trouble.
Fun for all ages, it's aimed at primary and intermediate students. Some basic science concepts are explored, and there's even a monster word search in the back, containing both fun and scientific words. Perfect for young inventors and scientists, this is a novel made up of short stories and Monster Invention Logbook entries, and has other nods to the original Frankenstein.
(Includes Sir Julius Vogel Award winning, Frankie and the Netball Clone, first published by Challenge, Australia’s National Students’ Magazine.)
USA Today bestselling author, and winner of the Wright-Murray Residency 2021, A.J. Ponder (BSc, Dip Teach) is the author of numerous novels and short stories including the award winning Frankie and the Netball Clone, Dying for the Record, The Sylvalla Chronicles, Wizard's Guide to Wellington and more.
A.J. lives in a hundred year old house overlooking Wellington harbour with three cats and a family all obsessed with games, books and dungeons and dragons. A.J. has a head full of monsters, and recklessly spills them onto the written page. Beware dragons, dreadbeasts, taniwha, and small children—all are equally dangerous, and capable of treading on your heart—or tearing it, still beating, from your chest.
This is one of the best children's books I have read in a while. Frankie is just such a delightfully fun, sweet, likeable character whose ideas and inventions never seem to go the way she plans. The book is full of laugh out loud funny scenes and quirky illustrations.
It it written as a group of interconnected short stories which makes it great for reading out loud.
This became an instant classroom favorite. The kids LOVE Frankie and want to know when there will be more books about her crazy inventions. It is fun watching them play out the stories and draw their versions Martie and Frankenclone. We've actually had a rash of baby Martie sightings lately~ I love it when a book piques their imagination!
I may be a little bit biased, but I loved this book, and Richard did too. (But I don't think I'm totally biased as A.J. is a Sir Julius Vogel Award winning author with stories in both New Zealand and Australian school journals.) the Frankie Files is the story of a young inventor who loves inventing, and adults reading to children will enjoy some of the subtle (and not so subtle) Frankenstein references. Frankie tells her story of growing up from starting school, until intermediate, using short stories that are appropriate for the age group, held together with Monster Invention Logbooks. Richard said he's not really a fan of short stories, but these hold together to form a novel as the character grows.
A funny and charming kids books that adults will enjoy too. The incorrigibly curious Frankie is a delightful aspiring inventor whose creations cause a bit of trouble and chaos. I really enjoyed the Monster Invention Logbook sections and the quirky humor and clever word play throughout make this a rollicking fun read.
