A celebration of hedges, written at the end of the 70s, when this UK habitat was being cleared for intensive agriculture. Really interesting botanical and ecological information on hedgerow plants and wildlife, from trees and shrubs, to invertebrates, to birds and mammals that make hedges their home, or conduit. At times lyrical, this non-fiction book also details traditional beliefs and customs linked with hedgerows, like medicinal plant uses, and folklore superstitions. As well as being interspersed with excerpts from prose and poetry, the book has a final section introducing hedge planting and maintenance techniques. An enjoyable and informative read. However, not a technical manual for hedge-laying, or other management methods.
