The Village Idiots #1

The Village Idiots: Part 1 - Inheritance

Rate this book
First in a trilogy of novellas, The Village Idiots ‘Inheritance’ sets the scene for a comedy of errors in a sleepy Greek Village, as two friends find themselves sinking deeper in to trouble with each bad decision they make.

Spiros is a simple man who is easily led astray, but who has rarely wandered further than the village and its surrounds. Older, slightly more wayward and most definitely not wiser, Takis has spent his years taking Spiros under his wing, whilst taking advantage of his younger friends naivety.

When the duo, who often scrape by in life to make a living, discover they are heirs to an estate, they mistakenly believe that their ship has come in!

As they discover their inheritance is not all as it seems, Takis begins to plot their way out, dragging poor Spiros with him. As one escapade spirals in to another, Takis is easily lured by the money signs while Spiros finds his eyes are being opened to a wider world.

Amidst the ouzo and the scheming, this charming and comical tale will leave you eagerly awaiting the next instalment!

About the author

Sara Alexi

Best selling author Sara Alexi was born in Oxford, England. After travelling widely she now splits her time between England and a tiny rural village in the Peloponnese, in Greece, where she has renovated a stone farmhouse, whilst observing the Greek way of life and absorbing the culture.

As a qualified psychotherapist, Sara ran her own practice for years. Her artistic nature was, during that time, confined to painting and she exhibited widely. Her move to Greece was the catalyst that began her writing.

Her 'Greek Village Series' has been very well received and provides a keenly observed, compassionate insight into the Greek people and culture, and the human condition in general.

Lovely story

In the style of the best 19th-century fiction, Sara Alexi is issuing her latest book in parts over the next few months. Part one begins the story of Takis and Spiros, describing their tenuous hold at scratching out a living, and what happens when they are left a yacht after a friend of theirs dies. Although they seem at first an unsympathetic pair, stupid, dirty and even dishonest, their story quickly drew me in until I was completely caught up in the hilarious yet heart breaking lives of these two incompetent pranksters.

The setting wafts us to the warm and sunny Greek shores where the sea murmurs, the oranges colour on the trees, the coffee is always sweet and hot, and the chicken is smothered with lemon sauce. Here everyone knows their neighbour. Yet Alexi does not overly sentimentalise this landscape nor these people. There is crime and poverty and discord and chicanery. There is physical disability and mental illness. But there is also love and generosity. What really sets the books in Alexi's Greek Village Series apart from a typical 'beach read' is the way in which characters who at first seem little more than stereotypical 'villagers' grow to hold such individual places in my heart. Takis and Spiros are no exception. Sara's books convey a genuine love for the place and for the fictional friends she has populated it with. Even while I laughed at their ridiculous exploits--and it is a very funny book--I found myself caring about these people. A lot.

A visit to this particular Greek Village always feels like a journey back to old friends and it holds a delicious potential for making new ones. I am looking forward to the next instalment with pleasure.

I read this book for the ATY 2021 Reading Challenge Week 4: Monochromatic cover.

Two men who are more childlike than adult inherit a tour boat. (I wondered at the beginning if the lawyer was having a bit of fun with them.) Spiros and Takis have little of their own and are looked after by the other villagers. When they inherit this "yacht" from George, they think they have it made for the rest of their lives. The reality soon sinks in as they discover their money maker is really a money drain. What will they do to get out from under this new burden? Sell it? Lose it? Sink it? Oh, dear! Two more books await. In India, they celebrate the Village Idiot because they take the burden of that role from other people. Do they feel the same in Greece?

I found this a little sad rather than funny. However , Sara paints a picture of Greek life with its highs and lows

I did not see the humor in referring to Spiros and Takis as the "village idiots."

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway.

Another terrific, but very short, book from Sara. I can't wait for the next instalment to see how this tale of Inheritance of Spiros and the conniving and manipulative Takis works out.

Well the first part of this story has me hooked. You just have to laugh at the mess they got themselves into. Will be interesting to see how Parts 2 & 3 span out.

A brilliantly told story focusing on two friends from a Greek village who come into an unexpected inheritance.
Will they use it wisely?
Being a huge fan of all of Sara's books, this one did not disappoint.

I Love all of Sara's books, and this is no exception. Her Greek Village series is impossible to put down and I am always happy to make new friends and visit the old friends there in Greece. I love her writing style and the fullness of character that she gives each and every villager. The only drawback is they end to soon. And now with the Novellas, it is even sooner. The great news is that Sara is a prolific writer and the next "fix" is right around the corner.

An excellent and fun read, and, fortunately (or unfortunately) very true to life and my experiences. One can just see what's coming, right around the corner, as these two fellows are in hot pursuit of The Next Big Hot Idea. All cultures, all nationalities all peoples, we're all about the same, some just more or less, than others.
