Full disclosure: a family member asked if I could take a look at his friend's father's book, to help guide them to publication. I was reluctant, as you would be, expected to dislike it, but agreed to take a look.
The book captured me. It is unlike anything I've read. It is beautiful, thought provoking, funny, gutsy, meaningful- and all set in an incredible exciting time and place. The characters are so real, your heart just aches for them. The historical details are fascinating. It's a bit like a Robert Michener book without pages of fluffy description, and with real humour.
The author is deceased, but I am very proud to have been able to give his family some guidance on putting this book out.

In truth I was first put off by the attempted foreword by the author before I read this book. I do understand Leon Levit wants the reader to come to this book without the prejudice belief that just because a person is Jewish they are better, or worse, than someone else. But as I read on, I was instantly drawn into the life of young Albert and could not put the book down.
Albert Berg is a Jewish boy, with a Russian father, growing up in Germany and this makes him an enemy of the state. He wishes to express his pride in his Jewish belief, which only alienates him. Whither he is Jewish or not he, Albert still has the desires and fears of the young men as war revolutionizes his whole life. After he had lived a full life, Albert summarizes his life and the Jewish people perfectly on the last page.

The survival of a Jewish German during the world war
The is a story about Albert, the Jewish son of a factory owner in the period just before and during world war 1. Albert loves his country and is then forced to leave for the safety of a country that will not judge him because he is a Jew. Follow Albert on his journey from one life to another and live the trials and tribulations through his eyes. Great story and the characters are well developed. This story will take you through a journey of emotion and amazement at what happened to a race just because of the crazy beliefs of a psychopathic leadership like the Nazis. Leon Levit does a great job of describing the times and what the people experienced as the story follows our main character Albert on his life's journey. Must read for anyone who loves a great story of survival. The author does a great job of telling this story.

Heartbreaking and interesting at the same time.
I was drawn in and held captive from the moment I started this book. The imagery is brilliant and makes feel like I’m there watching it all happen before my eyes. It’s an amazing story that depicts prewar Germany and the start of Naziism and the State of Israel. This book triggered some real research for me as I was reading as it enlightened me to more from those Times hat I never knew before. I appreciated the insight on what it was like to be a Jew during the nazi reign and what it was like to flee their homeland in hopes of finding safety in Palestine. I highly recommend this thought provoking, informative and even sometimes humorous look into history!

My mother is German Jewish and she left Germany because of the Nazis but ended up coming to the US. Therefore, the contains some history that I recognize.
I found the book very interesting because it is about German Jews who emigrate to Palestine. An underlying question in the book is what does it mean to be Jewish. Is there such a thing as a Jewish nation?

Mercedes in the sand
This was a very informative story about the days before Hitler and after Hitler. The times were very trying for most Jews no matter where they lived. A good account for most readers.
