Lambert Schmithausen, Ph.D. (University of Vienna, 1963), is a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, having retired from a 32-year professorship of Indology and Buddhist Studies in the Department of Indian and Tibetan Studies at the Asia-Africa Institute of the University of Hamburg in 2005. Previously, he was an associate professor of Indology at the University of Münster. His main fields of research are the Yogacara tradition of Indian Buddhism and Buddhist ethics.
