Nick Shaw’s book is written from the point of view of the protagonist, a young man of twenty-two who enters into a clandestine relationship with a married woman who is fourteen years older than him. This adulterous relationship is also an inter-cultural one since the protagonist is a brown-skinned foreigner while the woman, Hilli, is German. The book describes the character arc of Hilli, a self-confident woman, who has lived through the war years to become a successful professional in post-war Berlin. In Hilli, Nick Shaw has succeeded in creating an unforgettable character and this book is worth a read.
