Desiree Hancock is the eldest of three children raised by a single mother. She gets pregnant at sixteen by a young man who has big plans for his life, which do not include her. While living in public housing, she gives birth to two children, and attempts to liberate herself from the welfare system by returning to school and earning her high school diploma. In comes Leslie Lambert, a white, wealthy lawyer, and with no children, never married. She is attracted to Desiree, but Desiree’s only interest in Leslie is the lifestyle that she can give to her children. For a while, Desiree plays along until Leslie asks her to make a choice. Desiree is uncertain about exposing who Leslie is. It takes a life-changing event for Desiree to come to terms with the knowledge that Leslie is offering her more than any man ever did.
Love really does conquer all! I am always a sucker for a great love story, and this one is it! Everything works out in the end, and that left a smile on my face.
Desiree overcame many struggles, including her anger toward Wallace and her mother, Olivia. She finally moved out of public housing and allowed her heart to make room for Leslie and the intimate relationship that developed between them.
Both shed fear and apprehensiveness and focused on caring for one another and trying to build a better life for Desiree and her children.
I would have loved to see more editing and fine-tuning with this book. I agree with a previous reviewer that it reads like a first draft--as if care, proofreading, and formal editing was of no concern.
This fact is disheartening because the story is such a beautiful one.
However, errors and lack of editing aside, I connected with this story instantly. I wanted to savor every scene and story transition, and I am glad I did.
I believe anyone can find a bit of themselves in A Different Flavor of Love, as it relates to growth, disappointment, struggles, and love.
With a new look into editing, revamping, tweaking, and a bit more focus on character development, and breaking the book into chapters, this could very well be a bestseller.
I was nervous reading this book because of the content versus my religious beliefs. However, as I evolve and come to greater understanding and wisdom, I am overtaken by the power of true love. This book is a TRUE fairytale to all single moms!
The main character Desiree is a figure we can all relate to. Dispite the disadvantages in her life she digs deep within and is triumphant. This is a quick, easy, and entertaining story.
