I was gifted this book when I was in middle school. My mother was a bartender... One of her customers claimed to have written it, and suggested she pass it on the her preteen. And so she did. I believe that copy was signed, but it's long gone now. I never forgot how well it was written. I'm grateful it helped to shape my perspective and develope my vocabulary. I ended up becoming a homeless teen/young adult, and was incredibly mindful to avoid sex-work while experiencing street life. I mostly credit that to having read this, because there were many many opportunities but I always chose otherwise. I was about 13/14 years old when I read it, am currently 38 years old. It definitely left a mark.
This is very well-written, compelling and educational memoir which ought to be required reading for all teenagers and parents of teenagers. It is no less relevant today than it was in the early nineties at the time of its publication. Cutler offers not only a good story, but real, valuable advice.
This book was the true story of a runaway and his journey beyond. I especially liked the origin of the story as it took place in Florida-I was familiar with many places mentioned in the story.
