Hermann Bayer, PhD; degrees in economics, sociology, psychology, and business administration. Okinawan Shorin Ryu karate-jutsu practitioner since 2016 in addition to Japanese karatedo since 1981. Hermann has worked in academia (research scientist, professor, academic dean) and as a CEO in the private sector (Germany). He immigrated to the USA in 2005 and resides in Virginia Beach, VA.
Publications on karate-jutsu's and karate-do's socio-cultural roles, development, and Western misconceptions, after several books and numerous articles on industrial relations and on coaching & consulting topics in in his former career.
Hermann's karate training began in Europe (1981) with Japanese karate-do until he―to better understand the arts' initial life protection purpose beyond its Japanese interpretation―added Okinawan karate-jutsu. Over the years he has spent considerable time with renowned Japanese, Western, and Okinawan karate masters, all the while researching the essence, core concepts and underlying ideas of the styles they represent.
Today, in his upper seventies, and holding Dan ranks in Doshinkan Karatedo, Shorin Ryu Shorinkan, and Okinawa Kobudo Kokusai Rengokai, Hermann is still training hard. He practices karate daily and attends several "empty hand" and "kobudo [weapons]" training-sessions per week, accompanied by annual training camps in the USA and in Okinawa.
To combine (not to be confused with "to integrate") traditional Okinawan karate-jutsu with sports-karate, Hermann successfully competes in tournaments and still secures first places in his age group against younger opponents.
