edit: 5/15/2018, my 2nd time reading this. i love suisei pair. i love io. the end.
----
this!!!!!!
the story starts out with a prologue, in the pov of 22 year old ogata io (rank: FPO c/1). he's been moving from one foster family to another throughout his childhood since he was 6, and this continues until he was 11 years old and from then on, he lived with the ogata family. the fam runs a silk goods shop, the brother coordinates sewing factories, and the sister works in a sewing factory that sews harnesses for planes. there's a lot of... sewing going on this family. anyways, that's not even important. what's important is that even though he is blessed to live with 3 foster families that have money and cared enough about him to make sure he feels right at home, he never truly felt like he was part of their family, but an outsider.
his family sadly bids him farewell as he departs to rabaul of papua new guinea. his family doesn't think much of the fact that he's being transferred from his home base of yokosuka to the islands since being deployed abroad comes with the job. but he hides the true reason for his transfer, fearful that he would dishonor and shock them. previously, he strived to be serious and pure like his foster family, but in the end, he wasn't able to, and so he thought it was best to leave them and go to an island far, far away where he won't see them again.
you learn later in the story that he was actually demoted and there's a reason why his superior wanted him as far away as he possibly can, hence io's transfer to the pacific....
after the prologue, the story shifts to the pov of the pilot, tani toujuurou (rank: also FPO c/1), and it pretty much stays in his pov until the very end. it starts out with him looking all over the place for his junior of 1 year, atsutani rokurou (the gekkou/moonlight/irving observer from vol 2, remember him?? :DD ), who was just transferred to their base. he wants to recruit rokurou as his observer, and pair, since if you remembered from vol 2, rokurou is trained as both a pilot and a observer. therefore, toujuurou wants to increase his chances of survival by recruiting someone with two specialities under his belt.
what drove toujuurou to even request being transferred to the pacific himself (vs staying in the mainland of japan since his base in tateyama normally don't send people off) is because of his past experience with his ex-fiancée. just when he was about to get married, his fiancée ran away and eloped with her childhood friend. due to the embarrassment and not wanting to stay near anyone who is familiar with him, he immediately requested to be transferred to the rabaul base.
when he got to the base, he had expected to fly the carrier attack (torpedo) bomber plane as a pilot (his preferred aircraft) but due to the base not having enough planes, he was assigned to be positioned to fly the dive bomber instead. not only that, his pair at the time was an older superior that was completely lazy, constantly complaining, and wouldn't even do his share of the work. toujuurou felt as if his life was at risk because of this guy's negligence. he finally transfers to another squad, which gives him the opportunity to find a new pair before the superiors assign one for him. he feverishly looks all over the base for rokurou but was disheartened to find that he is too late - rokurou is already assigned to be paired with wataru (who is the pilot of gekkou).
toujuurou feels like he always gets the short end of the stick. he never gets his first choice, he's always cast away to be and have the "second" best thing. when he was younger, he loved to read and wanted to go into the field of literature. however, he was pressured to join the navy by his family. he doesn't regret being a soldier, but he does wonder what his life would be like if he was able to choose his career... because now, he's disappointed and in anguish at where he is with life at the moment since he's not able to obtain what he wants - he couldn't keep his fiancée from running away, he can't be the pilot that he wanted to be riding the craft of his choice, or have the career he had hoped for, and now he can't even pair up with someone that he wanted.
he is now assigned to fly the 2-seater plane named suisei (comet) (to the americans - judy), which is a single-engined, high-speed carrier dive bomber that is also capable of recon and launching torpedoes. (history lesson: it was SUPPOSED to replace the type 99 carrier bomber [americans called it "val"] - it's the aircraft used by the pair in vol 5 fyi - but well, as you will read in this volume, the suisei sucked as a dive bomber because of structural issues, and therefore it ended up being used for recon and level bombing, and val still remained in service). unfortunately, the suisei has this atrocious reputation of breaking down mid-flight. he was assured that the plane was revamped and that everything would be fine, but that obviously was not the case for the duration of the entire book.
with a new 2-seater plane, comes a new partner, and toujuurou is assigned to work as the pilot for the comet, and be paired with io, who will work as his observer. toujuurou is one of those friendly, talkative character who hangs out with peeps, go for a drink, and simply tries to enjoy the life that he got left... well, when he can... not that he has much expectation of living through the war anyways. however, io is the complete opposite. he's cold, indifferent, and keeps to himself. he says the bare minimum, and would pull away whenever toujuurou would try to bond with him as a pair. toujuurou gets impatient with io's desire to be alone and tries to convince him that being a pair is more than being a colleague, but a pair is your lifeline. his life is in io's hands, and vice versa. a pair does everything together. they eat, work, and sleep in the same quarters. this is so they can create a bond stronger than even married couples and families. io doesn't seem to understand that, but there's a reason why io is pushing toujuurou away. he believes he's "dirty". not only that, he hyperventilates whenever he touches someone, and this is due to a traumatic experience from when he was in his last base. io doesn't trust anyone, but at the same time he fears being alone. he doesn't want to be abandoned again, and therefore he'll be alone, despite hating it to the point of wanting to die.
they're also known throughout the base for their quirky hobbies. io writes terrible haikus (despite trying really hard lol), and toujuurou carves wooden buddha statues (because he had a dream when he was a kid where he was told to do so lololol). everyone gives them the nickname, the "cursed pair" because they believe the comet pair place spells on their creations in order to harm those they dislike (in the soldiers' case, the allies). obviously that's not true, and this hurts the pair because they believed people respected their work, not make fun of it and use it to curse others. i thoroughly enjoy io's sarcasm and jokes pertaining the wooden carves, which aggravates toujuurou to no end, but it's all for good fun. it's the playful side of io that you don't always get to see!
as for as the character themselves, both toujuurou and io are amazing characters. you have two people with complete different personalities but at the same time, they make a fantastic pair. io comes off as cold, awkward, and rude in the beginning, but he's really just a fragile person who seeks the warmth of a human touch. and i love his unexpected and sarcastic humor. and despite how bad they are (according to toujuurou), i love io's haikus! toujuurou is all about commitment, and he just wants to be respected and to have someone that will always be there for him just as much as he would do the same for them. the more time they spend with each other, the more they allow themselves to open up and to entrust their lives to the other person. like the other volumes, it doesn't rush into romance. there's a slow, gradual shift from "can barely stand each other" to "lovers". they are so compatible though, it fucking hurts. as much as i love rokurou and wataru from vol 2, this was way more "romantic" and i think it's mainly seems that way to me because this book shifts to both toujuurou's and io's pov. so i got to read how much the other felt TO them.
definitely give this a read! but make sure you read vol 2 first! til the next one ~
