The Book of Lurch

Rate this book
This is a book about a hunch-backed, club-footed cockatiel named Lurch. Even though it is about the adventures of a bird, this is not a children's book. Indeed, some of Lurch's proclivities were decidedly "mature". As well, there is a chapter containing phrases in French and German, with translations, but of little interest to small children - though, I hope, amusing to adults. Thus, if you are under 13, slide this book back onto the shelf. If, however, you are over 13, put on your bifocals and enjoy!

Being a former parakeet, chicken, and cockatiel pet-owner myself... Yes, you read that right - I had a chicken for a pet... I first learned of 'Lurch', the hunch-backed, club-footed cockatiel when his owner accidentally wandered into my Book Reading Event, May of 2017.

Virginia (author of The Book Of Lurch) stopped in during my Book Reading at a local bookstore and was kind enough to stay for awhile and listen to the two books from which I was reading. Being it was a small group that evening - Virginia, the bookstore owner, a gentleman who was killing time before a baseball game but ended up staying for the duration of the Book Reading, and myself - my book event turned into a short evening of conversation between four strangers who picked up right where we had left off on the original conversation that never was; the conversation was good, and that's where I learned about 'Lurch.'

From her description of 'Lurch', her club-footed cockatiel, and the other tales she shared, I knew I wanted to read 'The Book Of Lurch', due to be released in June/July 2017. But as it happens, Virginia's books don't last long on the shelf - you have to be there at the precise time of the precise day to get your copy.

It wasn't until I attended another book reading in January 2018 when I bumped into Virginia again, and she had brought ten copies of her most recent book, 'Saving Grace', which she had just released in December 2017. I darn near tripped over a couple of chairs to get to her and her limited supply of books and was happy to find out, upon ringing up my purchases, that 'Lurch' was in stock, too. I bought both books on the spot.

'The Book Of Lurch' brought me back to my own avian-adventures, starting when I was 8 years old with 'Aquarius', my chicken. I've had a couple of parakeets over the years, and I've even had a rescued cockatiel. I could easily relate to her descriptions of Lurch's personality and antics.

'The Book Of Lurch' is one of those books where it doesn't take long to become absorbed by the tales, and one is never enough; you have to read one... more... chapter, and then you'll promise yourself that you'll put the book down, although that really doesn't happen.

I originally thought I'd share this book with my friends, but then remembered, Virginia autographed this book to me. So, it's mine. All mine. Go get your own copy on that precise day at that precise time (call ahead to make sure it's in stock.) ;-)
