This supplement collects 18 months of field research. Rather than the “8 parts of speech,” the approach is the “8 verb conjugations.” (1) PRONOUN map covers NUMBER, GENDER, PERSON & VOICE. (2) TOWERS map unifies TENSE-ASPECT-MOOD, and (3) MODIFIER map addresses NON-FINITE “VERBALS.” It’s ideal for test preparation, and 25 students are covered for the price of a pizza.
"Grammar Supplement 2 of 3, Mod Mazes," is aimed at future editors and journalists too, organizing those pesky creatures known as verbals (appositives, gerunds, participles, absolutes, infinitives) plus esoteric sentence-types like Complex, Compound-Complex, and Focused into one simple, gloriously colored Norse myth-themed map. Just follow the side columns for NOUN, ADJECTIVES, and ADVERBS and you'll master all these persistent puzzles, going back to Plato, in no time at all. Most useful of all, use it to check your own writing for SENTENCE VARIETY. (And there'll be no squinting at 6-pica indexes either.) Lastly, you get 25 copies of the map, to share with friends and friends' kids.
Some major confusions the maps explain better than any traditional handbook include: “If gerunds take noun slots, how can they also have adjective and adverb functions? And how do I keep them straight in my mind as phrases versus clauses? And what’s the difference pertaining to when I should use each in my writing?” Also: “How do I keep all the rules for prepositions, objects, and predicates straight?” And let’s not forget the emotional engagement component provided by linking the maps to the illustrated BARDS OF FANTASIA novel (and soon, film) so the sentence examples aren’t just random thoughts. For without engagement first, no long term learning can take place.
The MOD MAZE map is designed for 8th to 10th grade. You can divide it in 10 chunks for honors students, or 25 chunks for regular classes (one sentence each.) The principles of course can be applied to ESL as well. Each student can be assigned one flashcard-type-section to to fill-in with any incident from the BARDS story they want. They can meet one-on-one with their teacher for further examples, then share what they learned with a short presentation. The color map with blank slots has the full version with samples printed on back. Features 25 2-sided map copies, 52 pages, 8.5" x 11" full color bleed. INTRO (BIO BELOW): Main interests are reviewing & writing for film. Fav book last year? It was on film writing, by the guy who created the tv series "Stitchers." I've posted 50 reviews here, catalogued 1,000 books, and also have a YA novel for free review. My Listopia CELTIC list shows some of its genre influences (and it's on 6 other lists too): https://www.goodreads.com/list/book/3...
I can't wait 'til the e-book world starts encouraging full color pics in books. Right now 130 color pages printed through Createspace can't be made for less than about $20. I'm trying to lead this, and am taking my lumps for sure. But my new GRAMMAR MAPS manuals-trio should cement my place as a linguistic expert and pioneer. My 30-year bio shows other milestones in songwriting, education, and performing arts.
BIO: S.W. Wilcox, aka DJ Scott, was born and raised in California. He earned a BA in English in Pa. in 2004. An animated short version of "Bards of Fantasia" was made in 2007, for schools. As a teen, Scott also corresponded with famed fantasy pioneer Michael Moorcock. Editorial rave reviews are featured on his Amazon product pages. First full, official bio is linked below. My grandson is in 10th grade and I’ve been looking for a way to make grammar more interesting for him. My eyes glazed over in school when it came to grammar but I stumbled through English class somehow. I am quite sure that made it harder for me to write well, which is an essential task in so many fields. I got Bards of Fantasia Grammar Maps and the companion novella, A Poem for Britain, for my grandson. He is reading the novella and trying out the Grammar Maps. The amazing graphics and the story have captured his attention. I am really pleased that he is now open to considering the best use of nouns, adverbs, and adjectives. I’m confident it will improve his writing. I think Grammar Maps will be an exciting new tool for teachers to use in getting kids’ attention to a topic that otherwise might not interest them. In fact I believe the Grammar Maps will also help me in my writing.
