This is a short read with the typical tips to help you declutter your home...but I couldn't finish it. The final line that did it for me was "You actually haven't solved the problem yet, but you certainly have tamed it some - and sometimes that's all we can hope for". Not much encouragement there. Many parts of this book were like a comforting pat on the hand. "Good job emptying the trash bins, now go take a break". (Yes, taking out the trash was actually mentioned.) And to add another part that said, in reference to possible sentimental items, "Perhaps it's better suited living in the attic with the children's old things". Decluttering doesn't mean stuff it in the attic. You aren't solving anything. You need to go through that stuff too! If you are looking for an encouraging kick in the butt with great organizational tips, then this book is NOT for you.

Live Simply: Declutter Your Environment, Unload Your Mind And Simplify Your Life — Hazel Simpson (3 Parts/8 chapters) — Sept. 3-6, 2017

The way this book began, I thought I was going to hate it. The author writes in a very conversational way, and that can really grate on me.

That's not to say it didn't start off pretty decently. The author gave examples of how clutter happens and asked hypothetical questions about how junk gets collected. (Like: If you had to leave your living space right now, and you could only grab one thing, what would it be?) Interestingly, I’ve always been good about unloading my technology when I’m done with it (and others as well,) but it’s the harder stuff—the papers, moments, the drawings my son did when he was twelve, that trip me up.

This book is divided up into three parts, which are basically (though not the real titles): Why; How; What Now. the author utilizes the MAPP process. (Note: This author likes to use a lot of acronyms for the sections.) Which is well and good. Unfortunately, the author spends way too much time using skits and other jokey examples, instead of getting to the heart of the matter and simply telling and showing the reader how to go about the actual process. That was frustrating. I found myself jumping/skimming the chapters after that, looking for the good stuff. Also, as Ms. Simpson talks about throwing paint cans out, she fails to mention that it is against the law in some states to do so. One needs to fill the can full of kitty litter or some such thing to dry the paint out (or pour it out on old newspapers and allow it to dry,) before the can can get tossed in the trash.

If you enjoy antidotes, and reading along with the author as though they were talking to you personally, maybe you will find this book uplifting. Some of the ideas/thoughts in this book were good, but after awhile the sections all ran together and started sounding the same. The author also had a hodgepodge of things to try and experiment with. Focusing on a few points maybe would’ve been better use of the time.

In the end, while there was a few new things I learned in this book, most of it felt repeated in each new section. There are countless books out there that are concise, shorter, and have a lot more tips that are efficiently written besides this one. Read this only if you want a more kitschy description with a hodgepodge of technics, or if you learn by acronyms.

I really liked the philosophical questions that author asks, but the rest of it, not so much. However, if you are having a hard time even starting to declutter, the self-awareness questions makes the book worth reading.

Three stars.

A quick, easy read - Live Simply is humorous and speaks directly to the reader quite often, but mostly a rehashing of information easily found elsewhere ... especially if you read many books on decluttering and/or minimalism.

It was okay...

There was really nothing new in this book. Same things most of the "experts" tell us. A few interesting tidbits, but nothing earth shattering.
