‘Virtue is persecuted more by the wicked than it is loved by the good.’

Oliver Kent PhD is an author and teacher who passionately believes that there's no good reason to make another's life harder and that it's usually less painful to learn from someone else's mistakes. As such he's currently in the process of sharing his (often hard-won) experience through writing books that help make life a little easier. He also dances. A lot. He has published many books on the Tango as well as books Healing your Relationship with God, Finding Hope: Searching for Happiness, and two books of Buddhist quotations with accompanying reflections.

In Book 1 Oliver sets the pattern for sharing the eloquent Buddhist quotations with commentary or reflections. A few examples follow:

‘Respond to every call that excites your spirit.’

When was the last time that you grew as a person? It doesn't have to be huge. A small step each day soon adds up. It's never to late to take another step.

‘You are searching for treasure but the real treasure is yourself.’

The world of consumerism calls us to look outwards, distracting us with this and that. Yet all the joy and love and wisdom you possess, is within you.

‘There is also a heaven upon earth in our own breasts. Do not seek it without, but within your heart; then you will not come into heaven for the first time when you die, but remain in it always.’

What do you know to be true? Reflect on the times your mind was clouded and remember that mindfulness helps to clear confusion away.

‘Beauty surrounds us, but usually we need to be walking in a garden to know it.’

Imagine sitting in a Buddhist monastery high in the Himalayas. Outside is cold and ice. What would you miss about the life you have now?

These are but four of the quotations and reflections in this treasureable book – moments of repose and introspection that make our lives more beautiful. Read in peace and gratitude – Oliver Kent brings s closer to or own spirit.

I don't practice Buddhism, but the insights in this book make a lot of sense to me. I like the idea of admitting that I don't know what to do because this will allow me permission to seek a deeper truth and meaning in my life. I appreciate things that I have, but I have to be aware of things I can do without to simplify my life. It is very hard for me not to be envious of other people, but I must strive to do this to achieve inner peace. I have to be more mindful of the times when I feel angry or afraid because these things prevent me from experiencing happiness. I don't have to be sad because all of the things that I have lost will come back to me in some other form. This happened to me when I lost a job that I had for ten years, I found another job less than one year later, and I have been working at that job for almost ten years now. I will try to embrace silence and to think more before I speak. I hope I can become an easier person to work and live with if I follow these principles. The insights in this book are easy to understand and helpful to me in my life.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I actually read the 2nd volume of this before reading this one, and greatly enjoyed both. As I said in my review for the other volume, even though I have read a lot of books about Buddhism, I was pleasantly surprised to find new content I was unfamiliar with in this book. I find the advice practical and easy to implement in everyday life. If you are looking for inspiration and information on how to live a more peaceful, fulfilling life, this book is a great resource!

I absolutely loved this book! I am not religious and really you do not need to be in order to read this book. This book gave peace in my heart. It makes you think and I love the author’s brief commentary after each quote. My favorite is Your pain becomes your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom. It is true, when you think deep down about it that is what makes us who we are.
I will recommend this book to everyone!

Buddhist teaching are a glimpse of teachings or quotes for one to ponder on or reflect, or to guide one. A beautiful selection and we thank the author for the collection. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion. The narration by Alex Raton was clear and precise.

I received a review copy of this audiobook.

There were no quotations in this book that felt distinctly Buddhist. Some clearly took influence from Christian thought (I am aware Buddhism predates the writing of the New Testament. This is about particular wording, not modes of thinking). Some were pretty standard to our modern society. Some statements were flat-out false.

The production value is okay. The periodic chimes between quotations could easily have been obnoxious, but I feel that they worked well.
