Digital marketing is now essential to making products and services a success and digital marketers are more and more in demand. This book is your guide to becoming an efficient and effective digital marketer, covering the expertise and array of skills you will need; how to stay current and future-proof your career; useful digital marketing tools, channels, frameworks and procedures; how to measure campaign success, and how to take the next steps to advance your digital marketing career.
Having scoured through multiple textbooks on the foundations of marketing and digital marketing, as a curriculum manager for a major apprenticeship provider I found that most books available fit into one of two categories; they are either pitched at too high a level or (in most cases) include no relevant real-world examples to provide effective learning to a Level 3 Digital Marketer.
Digital Marketer, by Eileen Brown and Betsy Aoki, is the first textbook I have come across that is pitched at exactly the right level, and is perfect for somebody relatively new to a digital marketing role. With five concise chapters a Level 3 Digital Marketer can gain a strong understanding of the importance of marketing, the relevance of their role, tools that can be used and the potential career options that may lay in front of them.
Chapter 2, The Role of the Digital Marketer, is very inspiring and motivating for anyone who has followed a route into digital marketing, being quoted as ‘a great career choice’ and although some of the examples used relate to the USA or US law, most relate to real scenarios and advertisements that we have all seen and remember, effectively cementing the knowledge gained in Chapter 3 (Tools, Methods and Techniques). The same chapter lists a large number of up-to-date tools that digital marketers use, and also gives some ideas of different tools a business could be using, both paid and free.
The book was published in late 2018 and, unlike most textbooks, would have been finished and edited very close to publication. Examples and tools suggested are current, relevant and used by real digital marketers. The only up-to-date topic that I felt was missing was GDPR, and instead there are descriptions of US data law, but realistically there are hundreds of relevant websites where information about GDPR can be gathered, being such a hot topic still.
From understanding the syllabus for each of the BCS Knowledge Modules for the Level 3 Digital Marketer, I was pleased to see so many references to the syllabus. The team roles explained in Chapter 4, Next Steps for the Digital Marketer, are very closely aligned with KM2 Marketing Principles, as are the sections on understanding the audience, and the steps in producing an effective campaign. Sections on creating social media campaigns, using a variety of tools and techniques, and ethical marketing are all relevant to KM3 Digital Marketing Business Principles. The only content of the programme that is specifically not included in this book is anything within KM1 Principles of Coding.
There is not a single sentence in this book that is irrelevant in terms of the Digital Marketer Apprenticeship Standard or the Occupational Brief.
Even if the rest of the book is skimmed, I would strongly recommend using this book just for the glossary alone. The glossary contains a plethora of key terms used in Digital Marketing, and would be ideal to be sat on a Digital Marketer’s desk to refer to whenever needed.
It is probably not designed for the more experienced marketer but if you are enrolled on the Level 3 Digital Marketer apprenticeship or are looking to employ somebody on the course, or if you just wish to know some of the foundations of digital marketing, then I recommend buying this book today.
Terrific primer (think Dummies Guide) for anyone looking to move into a digital marketing role. The book lays it all out in a simple format and includes everything from an overview of all the different jobs, tools, technologies and even some useful frameworks to get started. This is a terrific book for young/inexperienced marketers wanting to jump-start or extend their careers.
Useful Disclosures: - I got a pre-publication version of this book for free. - I worked with one of the authors, though not directly for or with her.
A comprehensive, clear introduction to the modern world of digital marketing. A must read for anyone considering a career in the field. The structure of the book and content makes it a very easy read. The authors go in sufficient details for anyone to make an informed decision about a marketing career without going so deep that the book would be more difficult to digest. Old marketing hands might not learn anything new though. This review is based on an advance review copy.
