Ruby is super excited to be visiting her Grandmother for a week. However on her journey there, she encounters a peculiar little cat, dressed like a pirate, carrying a book. When the cat begins to talk like a pirate, Ruby is suitably astounded. The pirate cat is on a quest to return the book to the Great Poet Gerry.

Ruby is drawn into the quest, rather unwillingly to start. All Ruby has to do is help the little pirate cat get back to his ship. No worries, easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Oops, I better not give some of the story away, he he. Everything does not at all go to plan and what follows is a rollicking adventure, full of cat scans, which are not at all what you think. Picture a cat purring in your ear and claiming to fix all manner of ailments, as well as fairies powered by beans and a dread pirate rotter who is one dastardly villain.

Ruby has to overcome many fears, face many dangers and put up with one very piratey pirate cat, in order to find his ship and return to the magic book to the Great Poet Gerry. What could possibly go wrong.

This was a fun read, and my six year old absolutely loved it. She was gripped from the first page and was adamant that we must read a chapter every night, until it was done.

RJ Simon has woven an entertaining tale, full of quirky characters and action packed adventure. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself talking like a pirate long after the book is through.

This delightful tale will enchant all its readers, young and old. This is a story about a little girl called Ruby Lane who has the most amazing adventure with a cat. But, this is not just any ordinary cat. This cat calls himself, Pirate (for short), and he leads Ruby on a very entertaining, if not educational, adventure.
I loved the way the writer invented adjectives and adverbs like ‘leg-hurty’ (my personal favourite), and redefined so many words and phrases we use in the English language. Her skill as an author has been best coupled with her imagination and creativity to produce this charming book.
This is a wonderful story for children beginning their reading journey into chapter books; for children who love animals and their pets and; for anyone who needs a warm ‘virtual’ book hug.
As Pirate himself might say, “If you don’t read this book ya head must be full of rats, and ya might be in need of a cat scan.” I’m afraid you’ll need to grab a copy to understand the full ramifications of such a mental predicament coz you’ll find no spoilers ‘ere! Enjoy.

If you like pirates and Alice in Wonderland then you will love this book. In this fantasy tale nothing is as it seems, and commonly held beliefs about pirates, ships, merpeople and more, are challenged and flipped on their head... in a good way. A swashbuckling tale of adventure. Arrr! Dive right in and be surprised.

Ruby is a girl with an overactive imagination and a messy room. On her way to stay with her grandmother for a week, she falls asleep and, when she wakes up, nothing is as it would seem. Between talking cats wearing a pirate outfit, to mermaids who are not what you expect, to all sorts of other fantasy creatures, this is an adventure that is full of twists and turns.

Aspects of the story reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.

I enjoyed many of the literal aspects of the fantasy creatures, something my son would really enjoy!

A pirate cat is such a great idea, and there's humour and drama most of the way through. I love the cover illustration of Pirate, which is what made me request the book, and I really like the explanation for why he is a pirate (amongst other things!). There's a real Alice-in-Wonderland feel as the characters and creatures Ruby encounters become more and more absurd. However, I feel the book could be improved by some editing for author echo/repetitive speech, and is let down by the implausible opening and a tired, cliche framing at the end.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Hang on for a wild and crazy ride when you read this book. Ruby is a young girl with an active imagination. She is on her way to visit her grandmother on an island but before she arrives, she meets up with a most unusual character: a pirate cat. He serves as her guide and friend as she attempts to deliver a book to the leader of a world that is vastly different to her own. In fact, we could call her Alice had she tumbled through a looking glass.
She meets up with all sorts of creatures who have been “borrowed” from other books. Some of them are friendly and others are not. THere are a series of adventures along the way where Ruby learns more about herself than almost anyone else. It is a funny and quirky story with lots of strange experiences. I particularly liked the part where Pirate Cat interacts with his human who tries to get him to wear another costume. Silly human to think she could get a cat to do something a cat does not want to do.
This is a book that can be enjoyed by both young reader and adults.
I give it four purrs and two paws up.

A fast paced adventure story that you won't want to put down - Ruby Lane by R J Simon is a brand new quirky tale for young readers.

Ruby, our main adventurer is a wonderfully creative thinker - who just can't stop thinking! She has a wild imagination and would much rather be up through the night  creating things instead of sleeping!

Luckily it is school holidays and Ruby is off to her Grandma's for a week of excitement. She hops on the ferry but due to her late night antics she nods off until the ferry pulls into the wharf near her Grandma's home. Ruby begins her walk but soon discovers a cat that talks like a pirate and talking lemons - certainly not the usual things she finds on the way to grandmas!  The pirate cat convinces her to help him return a very special book to the great Poet Gerry and she agrees.

From here the reader is taken on a very magical, fun, weird and crazy adventure all over the island. She meets many intriguing creatures along the way as she helps Pirate Cat on his quest.

Ruby Lane is a very fast paced book and although Ruby is at first portrayed as someone who can't slow down, she is a very clear thinker who is not only brave but kind.

You'll love the quirkiness of Pirate Cat - but be warned he does talk in pirate lingo throughout the whole novel so for those of you who don't think you can handle more than one 'me hearty' you might struggle a bit.

Only someone with a vivid imagination and fun filled ideas could create a book like this. R.J.Simon has used so many different ideas to bring this story, the magical land and it's characters to life.

I had lots of fun reading this story and was endlessly surprised by what happened next!

So what else can you do with this story?

This is a very cute story with very interesting characters. Arthur Fearsome Dragon is my favorite character.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
