As an Air Force Brat, the book kind of rang true...My dad was an officer and a squadron commander. My older sister insisted on dating enlisted guys and actually married one of my dad's men. My dad was not a happy camper...

A romance that made my heart twitter. Richard Gere (a heart throb), Debra Winger and Lois Gossett, JR give a commanding performance in the book and in the film.
This story is about a man that wants to become a Naval Officer and pilot. He comes from unfortunate family ties but heads out to make his life better.

He meets Debra Wiinger and together share a whirlwind romance with many issues in between as he does not (what he thinks and says) want to get involved but if actions far override his comments.

Richard Gere struggles to behave and follow the instructions of Lois Gossett, Jr which will come to an actually confrontation. Meanwhile his best friend whom had dropped out of the training program to take care of a woman that claimed to be pregnant was rejected by her and he comits suicide.

The plot is so entangled you simply must read this book to see that all is quite different in the end that you may expect. Read the book first and then see the film.
