Capital Kisses #2

The Bridesmaid and the Hurricane

Rate this book
A one-weekend stand over a year ago, and now they're coworkers...

Being a woman in TV is hard enough, but when the boss is trying to derail Radhika O’Leary’s career from behind the scenes, she has to make sure every aspect of her work—and her life—stands up to scrutiny.

Of course, the double standard is alive and well and Malcolm Jones, the broadcast meteorologist known as “Colm” to his friends and “The Hurricane Hottle” to his fangirls, knows that fame can hurt just as much as it helps. When Colm moves to DC, he’s excited to work with Radhika—her professional reputation is sparkling, and so are the kisses they shared that one weekend over a year ago when he was in town covering a blizzard.

But when Radhika is paired up with Colm for a project, all she sees is a looming storm over her carefully constructed career. Sparks still fly between the two journalists, and if they’re not careful, lightning might strike and alter the course of their lives forever.

Disclosure: I beta read an early version of this book and am friends with the author.

I liked this one. Great sense of place, Washington D.C. without any political shenanigans (which I'm not sure I could read right now thankyoucurrentevents). I really liked the heroine and the author does a fantastic job of writing "relationships" - most notably the heroine's small, close group of friends. The "friendship banter" is spot-on.

I wasn't entirely wild about the conflict, which hinges on the hero being SO good-looking (and a minor celebrity to boot) that women are practically throwing their panties at him. The author does the smart thing by writing other interesting, and sympathetic, female characters to round out this conflict. What saves this is that the hero is a nice guy who doesn't believe his own hype and genuinely does the right thing throughout the course of the story - even when two women completely lose their dang minds over him.

This is a fun, fast read - a second chance romance between television journalists. As someone who has lived in the DC area for almost 20 years, it's got a great sense of place. The hero and heroine are both people I'd want to hang out with (this is not a necessity for me, but always nice to see - makes for a relaxing read), and the heroine's group of girlfriends is a fun, well-drawn group.

What didn't work for me? Not one but two women creep all over Colm (the hero) - one at a party, one at work (Radhika, the heroine's, boss) in the most over-the-top, "jealous female" way imaginable. Once, for this plot device? Not my favorite, but okay. But twice was just too much.

In addition, there's a lot of odd logistical detail that gets included that bogs down the story - for instance, Colm brings her some ramen that she's going to eat later. The author tells us that she takes it to the break room, labels it (down to where she gets the pen from), and puts it in the fridge. There was so much detail that I figured it had to factor into the plot later (does she get poisoned? What's going to happen? Nothing, actually).

Would I recommend? Sure. It's a light, fun read that's not just set where I live, but highlights some of its landmarks in a new and fun way. If you're not turned off by Predatory Female Villains (TM), it's likely you'll really like it.

I was given an ARC for an honest review.

The Bridesmaid and the Hurricane is one of the stories in the Capital Kisses series. This book was able to be read as a standalone and I really enjoyed all of the characters in the story. I actually can't wait to get my hands on the other books now!

In this book we learn that Radhika and Colm hooked up for a one night stand more than a year ago. It was just supposed to be a rebound hook up for Radhika but now Colm is back in her life and the chemistry between them is still intense. The problem is that Radhika has been burned by love and is not willing to open her heart up. She works for a boss that is always out to get her and she is trying to prove herself as an amazing producer so she doesn't have time for romance and dating. Colm, however, realizes that what they had last year was just a little taste of what they could be like together and he is out to convince Radhika that not all guys are bad.

I really liked that this book didn't feel like a story I had read over and over again. The characters, experiences and how everything tied together had me constantly wondering what was going to happen next. I wasn't able to predict what was going to happen and I like that in a book. This was a fun book to read and I can not wait to dive into the others in the series to see what is going to happen with some of the other characters. - By Alisa

Fun and sexy!

Kelly Maher did two awesome things with The Bridesmaid and The Hurricane. One, she gave a great character driven story. Two, in a short story, she gave the reader a wonderful look at the diverse culture that D.C. has to offer.

Radhika O’Leary and Malcolm “Colm” Jones are fun characters. Radhika is smart, funny and very good at what she does. She deals with more than she should, so she can do what she loves. Radhika’s strength is something to behold. Colm has the charm of a southern gentleman. He was nothing I pictured him to be upon meeting and that made me really like him. His personality is only second to his looks and kindliness.

The Bridesmaid and The Hurricane is a fun and flirty with intense chemistry and personality. Colm and Redkina are fun together. His persistence and her trying to stand her ground is priceless. I loved their interactions and banter. Their chemistry was amazing. Colm and Redkina truly complemented each other. I also loved seeing this relationship build. Kelly Maher has a great start to her Capital Kisses series with the Bridesmaid and The Hurricane. A quick read that makes you laugh and gives you heat. I am very much looking forward to see what some of these lovely secondary characters get themselves into.

A copy of the title was provided for an honest review. I voluntarily chose to review this time.

While a standalone book, the prequel novella's hero & heroine make appearances, so they fit together nicely. I enjoyed this book. The hero wasn't an alpha jerk, which was a nice change from some of the books I've recently read. The heroine was a believable combo of competent and insecure. I look forward to reading the sequel books.
