To me this remains the best and most poetic book on Degas’s ballet oeuvre. Pulled it out again a couple of weeks ago to work on a series of lectures for pre-professional ballet students. So many books (and Degas exhibitions) came and went since 1984 but Shackelford’s brand of magic has only become more potent. The writing is elegant and informed, it stood the test of time. Excellent editing, too. Fabulous chapter titles.
