Well I read it with my school so yeah doesn’t really need a review but I’ll still give one…

So basically it’s a book based on a bunch of kids going to Bible summer camp (which sounds awesome) and they get surprise to make a play but theirs this kid named Susie and she doesn’t have a dad who really cares about her because her real dad Is in heaven so she wasn’t taught to be nice or anything….

Summer Fun is a pretty good children's book. Very like summer and Christian. I'd recommend it for kids age 7-10 who like fun reads and are interested in learning about God.

I decided to reread my old school books and this was one of them. I...was not impressed overall.

I won't speak to the writing style as I'm not good at gauging children's writing and I don't think that would be fair. Instead I'd like to focus on readability and themes.

One thing I noticed is that this wouldn't be any easy read for a non ACE student. There wasn't much explanation regarding the characters, so if you aren't familiar with them from ACE PACES you probably will be bored, confused, or both. It's understandable since they are school books, but it also limits their...interest? Intractability?

Another issue was the set up. Each story starts with a Scripture verse that ties to that chapter/short story. A few in the middle were well done, but the beginning and end ones didn't mesh well. Overall, they felt forced or like a far reach.

My biggest issue though was the themes. There were several, but love was one of the biggest. Unfortunately, I believe it was handled in two very unbiblical ways.

First, ACE is very pro, "God love everyone," which I believe to be a very dangerous fallacy.

Second, they equal love with nicety. This is another modern fallacy. Biblical love does not mean always being sugar sweet and affirming people or glossing over their wrongs, but that is what is presented in this book. I could kind of cope when it was presented among the children as, " She hurt my feelings but I'm choosing not to get angry." However, there is a bully who doesn't ever seem to be pulled up even by adults - who were meant to be supervising. There is no guidance or correction. Only, "Be nice to her."

Overall, not a useless book, but I wouldn't give it to a young child as a learning model.
2.5 rounded up.

the battered old copy of this and other ace and christi books they made us read at school... they're like memories from another phase of existence. my child self seems to have lived a life entirely different from my own. i think i truly get metamorphosis as a metaphor for growing up now.
