Uncle Billy's Southside Barbeque Restaurant in Portland, Maine, was the first to bring the cuisine that made linoleum famous from the plains of Texas to New England. The recipes presented here are a mix of Down South and Down East, simple and delicious.
'Uncle Billy's Downeast Barbeque Book' by Jonathan St. Laurent and Charles Neave
This is such a fun, and tasty, book! (and no, I didn't eat the book, lol)
But I have eaten at some of Jonny's diners/restaurants/BBQ joints over the years, starting with his Uncle Billy's Southside BBQ several years ago. Yes, children, there really was an Uncle Billy (although he wasn't blood-related to Jonny, if I remember rightly)
His places may close down off & on temporarily, but then eventually another incarnation pops up, like a sort of "moveable feast" to the delight of his long-time friends and fans!
Whenever I've been back in Maine visiting friends & some family we go there to experience some of the juiciest, tastiest "knock-yer-socks-off" BBQ I've ever had!
Served with some yummy side dishes, like poutine (french fries with cheese curds, topped with a brown gravy, which originated in Quebec, Canada), his BBQ is always amazing! So is his luscious Cole Slaw and don't even get me started on his delish desserts ...yeah, they're sublime!
Jonny started cooking at a young age, winning awards for his creative, signature dessert, "Death By Chocolate" when he was 17 and he was still a cooking school student! "It's to die for!" (lol)
His BBQ is based on Memphis style (at least that's what he's told me) vs Texas style or Louisiana style, and all; he traveled all the way to Memphis to learn how to make it.
Lots of great recipes, inter-twined with stories of him & Uncle Billy, plus Jonny's adventures in the culinary underground. And photos!
There's also some funny "pig art" from some of the patrons over the years!
So, if you like BBQ, try out the recipes in this fun & funny (& serious eats) book!
