This collection of essays written by leading American, British, and Swedish scholars surveys Swedish literature during the last 100 years, from 1891 to. 1991; it ranges from the work of Selma Lagerlöf and August Strindberg in the 1890s to that of Ingmar Bergman and Kerstin Ekman in the late twentieth century, including major figures such as Hjalmar Bergman, Stig Dagerman and Lars Norén. Some essays deal with individual works, whereas others provide a broader perspective on the authors' writings. All of the essays have been specially commissioned for this volume which provides a fitting tribute to the lifelong work of Karin Petherick, an inspired critic of Swedish language and literature.
