Who is Alice Whitehouse? Mortician’s assistant, gun store clerk and chairwoman of the neighborhood watch committee. Loving daughter of the Chief of Police. Best friend to local baker Felicity Bell. And then there’s the fact that Alice sees dead people. Unfortunately, they can also see her, and occasionally ask her help in solving their murder. With pluck, resolve and cheerfulness in the face of danger, she does just that, aided and abetted by the members of her neighborhood watch committee, and local police detective Rock Walker, on whom she may or may not have a secret—or not-so-secret—crush.
When Gemma Weston is found murdered, the crime baffles the police. It also baffles Alice’s neighborhood watch committee, but that has never stopped the spunky ladies of the committee before. They dive headfirst into the murder investigation, very much to the exasperation of Alice’s dad, Chief of Police Whitehouse, and the newest member of the Happy Bays Police Department, Detective Rock Walker. Spurred on by an increasingly annoying Gemma, whose ghost isn’t the nicest one Alice has ever encountered, she puts her sleuthing powers to the test to catch a killer before he or she can strike again.
Spooky Times is the first installment in this new humorous cozy ghost mystery series featuring Alice Whitehouse. You may have met Alice before, in The Mysteries of Bell & Whitehouse. This spinoff fully stands alone, and doesn’t require any knowledge of the original series, which is complete at nine books.
Nic has a background in political science and before being struck by the writing bug worked odd jobs around the world (including but not limited to massage therapist in Mexico, gardener in Italy, restaurant manager in India, and Berlitz teacher in Belgium).
When he’s not writing he enjoys curling up with a good (comic) book, watching British crime dramas, French comedies or Nancy Meyers movies, sampling pastry (apple cake!), pasta and chocolate (preferably the dark variety), twisting himself into a pretzel doing morning yoga, going for a run, and spoiling his big red tomcat Tommy.
He lives with his wife (and aforementioned cat) in a small village smack dab in the middle of absolutely nowhere and is probably writing his next ‘Mysteries of Max’ book right now.
This book is a very funny mystery with a sleuth that is a 30 yr old girl who has a cop for a father ,an uncle who is an undertaker , whom she works part-time for,and another uncle who owns a sports and gun shop and for whom she also works part-time for. Alice and her parents and some of her friends can see ghosts. This causes problems for Alice sometimes because the ghosts seem to want to communicate with Alice and if she isn't doing what they want, they will show themselves in weird ways and maybe angry braking thongs
So cute and fun! I loved Alice's character and enjoyed the shenanigans her and the neighborhood watch crew found themself engaged in! Not gonna say what it is but there was a certain "crime" they were after a person about that just kept me in giggles!
Then there was poor Gemma and her dead self. Can't decide if she was more annoying dead or alive but everybody should have their murder solved of course!
It is what it is...a light fun paranormal read with a mystery to boot and maybe just a tad of flirtatious romance.
Alice is contacted by Gemma, a newly departed soul that was murdered. Alice, her friend and roommate see and talk to ghosts. They contact Alice to help the police solve their murders. It is widely known that most of the town's people have this special ability. In walks Mr. hottie, police detective, Rock the new guy in the police department. This is a fun read. Lots of suspects and barely any clues. This is a must read.
An okay read. A town where most people can see ghosts, a wannabe cop and the neighbourhood watch. Can they solve the riddle posed by the bank tellers death? The characters are okay but the whole thing just left me thinking that I won't be reading the rest of this series as didn't really take to it.
This is pretty light reading, though the mystery is there, and it is humorous at times with just a touch of romance. It is definitely a cozy mystery, but entertaining and good of its kind.
Alice can see and talk to ghosts. Her former classmate is murdered and asks Alice to find her killer. Along with her best friend and the hot new detective in town she sets out to find the killer before the ghost drives her crazy. Good fun book, lots of laughs.
There is nothing particularly wrong with this book, I just didn’t like the characters, nor did I enjoy the whole ‘not only the protagonist can see Gemma’s ghost’ twist. I found the pacing lacking, and, well... I think I’ll abandon ship now.
Nic Saint is my absolute favourite author, what ever name he writes under. Perfect for a light hearted amusing read. I do read serious books too, but Nic make me happy.
Alice seems normal enough until a ghost appears. She not only sees and hears it, she also talks back to it! Then she agrees to find the killer and the real fun begins.
