The essential reference. Renowned expert Michael Bird provides a fresh, well-balanced view of popular furniture forms and regional styles from the Atlantic Provinces, French Canada, Ontario, and the Western Provinces.
An excellent book which explains the differences in the furniture styles and how they relate to where the makers came from and the general history of Canada. The book starts with a description of the variopus styles of art and architecture from the various countries (Louis XIV, Baroque, Regency, etc) and has a good time chart that shows how they relate to each other. the next few chapters relate the immigration history of Canada and the last few chapters describe the types of furniture found in the four main regions of Canada and how they relate to the immigrant populations that made them or brought them with them from their home country. There are over 700 images with descriptions of furniture from all parts of Canada; a very good glossary of terms; and an extensive bibliography. Not a book to read in a couple of evenings, but a book to read a couple of pages and then think about for the rest of the evening. Overall an excellent reference book.
