This book is the book this book was based on, which I liked rather a lot. I was a bit hesitant to read the "prequel" [Question: do you also call it prequel when it was written before the sequel? In any way, this book came before "Okashi no ie"] because it obviously would go into more detail regarding Kase's abusive behaviour. And I - basically I didn't want to stop liking him.

Well, I still like him. But it was still a really difficult book for me to read because of personal experience and stuff, so if you're triggered by mentions of domestic violence or suicide, don't read on please (and you might want to skip this book as a whole, obviously). And to be honest, I don't know if I would have been able to like Kase without having the book focusing on him.

Anyway, the main character of this book is Kaname, who feels responsible for a suicide of a young girl and who is deeply troubled because of it. He works himself to the bone at shitty jobs and is dating a guy - Kase - who keeps beating him up and raping him. Kaname sees this as his rightful punishment, and to read how these two men - who are both shouldering heavy loads - keep hurting each other... wasn't exactly fun. (In fact, considering I also read "Saezuru tori.." this weekend, it was probably too much, and the next book I'll read will be much lighter.) At his job, Kaname meets Kouhei, a confident and kind young man, who falls in love with him and helps him to come to terms with what happened and to face a brighter future.

It wasn't a fun book to read, but I was surprised by its depth. I've read other BL novels about abuse, and, um, that ranged from "hey, that just means he loves him" to "you should have protested more". I really felt that the author was aware how sensitive the topic is, and she did a good job. Kaname blames himself a little too much, but it doesn't come across as if he is to blame (which is isn't). Considering Kase's actions and behaviours in the following volume, and at the end of the book (apart from the fact that both Kase and Kouhei act like Kaname is a thing to be "given"..) I was able to - maybe not forgive him, but not hate him. It's really tricky, and what I like is that it the book actually doesn't make it easy for you. In the end, you get the dawn of a new day, with the promise that everything might get better.

In a way, apart from the final sex scene, it didn't feel too much like a typical BL novel. The development of Kaname's and Kouhei's relationship was very well paced and had a gentle feel to it and didn't seem to be forced. While the love story between them was a major part of the book, it really felt like the focus was more on Kaname's story, which I really liked.

The sex did feel a bit too much for a first time, but, well, I don't know whether there is an actual quota to fill but I suppose just once is seen as not enough.

While I don't think I'll reread this book (the other one I will reread, if only to check if I misunderstood some parts or if Kase is deliberately remembering things wrong), it was one of the better BL novels I read. This author has definitely proven herself to be able to write about difficult subjects in a way that doesn't make me cringe, which is really rare for this genre. Also, she manages to mix in some gentleness and hope with the drama. And this book made me think about a lot of things. Actually, I could write a lot more about.. more, but that would be too personal. In any case, I am glad I read it.

Merged review:

This certainly is one of Nagira Yuu's heaviest novels. While there is a happy ending, it takes a lot of bad stuff to get through to it. I admit I only reread it because previously I had only read it as an ebook but then purchased the real thing - otherwise I'm not sure I would have bothered to gather the strength to do so. It's not bad, not at all, but there are so many different issues crammed into less than 300 pages that it just takes some strength to tackle it. Especially if you're sensitive to topics like domestic abuse, maybe think twice before reading this. I intend to read the Kase-focused spin-off immediately afterwards this time around; I'm curious if this changes the way I see him.

The short story at the end felt very rushed and a bit tacked on, tbh, but it was still cute.
