In this action-packed samurai story set inside the halls of an all-American high school, Begets: Fall of a High School Ronin tells the tale of Emi Edwards, a high school geekgurl whose fighting to overthrow the cruel shoguns of her school. However in her journey to right wrongs, will her own cravings for popularity and power corrupt her quest to save the school? Will she able to establish a new world order? Or will violence just beget more violence?
This play is so good. I'm now dying to produce it... but it will be a long time before I have the clout, students, or fight choreography contacts to do it.
i was originally given this play to read by my theater teacher after i was assigned one of inside girl’s monologues for class and finished it in under a half hour. i adore everything about the text. qui nguyen has such a firm grasp on how high schoolers talk and act, and is able to use that understanding to exaggerate them in a way that doesn’t feel out of touch or cringey all. the comedy in this thing is INCREDIBLE- constant punches of quick wit. the bush joke had me genuinely coughing. wonderful representation for loser lesbians everywhere. i feel seen! certainly my favorite contemporary play, maybe one of my favorite plays of all time. does my school need to put this on next year and do my girlfriend and i have to play emi and mary? perhaps.
I loved it, So happy that they have some queer representation. I do wish that Patrick and Walter/Chantal’s plot line was resolved. I would put 4.5 stars but i don’t think that’s possible

Qui Nguyen's signature geeky style and unique characters shine brilliantly here. Unfortunately, some plotlines are left uncomfortably unresolved making the ending feel unearned.
Not as good as She Kills Monsters. At times, sexual references and violence a little over the top. Flimsy characters. Great premise- Mean Girls/ Shogun story, but poor execution and story
