Les Pieds-Noirs: idées reçues sur les Pieds-Noirs

Rate this book

[Review of 'Les Pieds Noirs - L'Epopee D'un Peuple', by Christophe Rouet - not listed on goodreads]

Light, affectionate walk through the history, culture, politics and pop culture of the Pieds Noirs - ending in the present, with a look at the commemoration of a regionalism that lost its region. Strong on language and - a favourite of mine - pop cultural ephemera (Orangina was a French Algerian creation). Quite an eye-opener - I had no idea how diverse the population had been (MLatese, Corsican, Neapolitan...) and not simply 'French'.

As a subject (and for a personal witness of lost nations), I find French Algeria, Belgian Congo, South Africa as was just so fascinating. Algeria is pretty much 'how not to do it' - though it did produce a clean break, arguably.

Great pointers in the reading list too. Oh, and Albert Camus is God.
