Una de las tesis que José Bergamín presenta en “El pensamiento perdido” sostiene que la inserción de las estructuras clericales en el seno del Estado supone el alejamiento de la Iglesia de las bases del cristianismo.
En este ensayo, publicado en 1976, se reúnen dos trabajos previos del autor: “Detrás de la cruz, terrorismo y persecución religiosa en España” donde defiende el cristianismo popular -alejado de la doctrina franquista- y “El pozo de las angustias”, que pretende conciliar marxismo y religión

José Bergamín Gutiérrez was a Spanish writer, essayist, poet, and playwright. His father served as president of the canton of Málaga; his mother was a devout Catholic. Bergamín would be influenced by both politics and religion and would attempt to reconcile Communism and Catholicism throughout his life, remarking "I would die supporting the Communists, but no further than that."
